What does an assistant audio software developer do?

An Assistant Audio Software Developer helps design, code, and test software applications that process or generate audio. They often work under the guidance of senior developers to build features such as audio effects, plugins, or digital audio workstation (DAW) tools. Their responsibilities might include debugging code, collaborating with sound designers, and ensuring software meets audio quality standards. This role requires knowledge of programming languages like C++ and familiarity with digital audio concepts.

What are some common challenges faced by assistant audio software developers when working on collaborative projects?

Assistant Audio Software Developers often work as part of teams that include senior developers, sound designers, and QA specialists. One common challenge is ensuring seamless integration of audio features across different platforms and hardware, which can require troubleshooting compatibility issues and adapting to rapidly changing project requirements. Effective communication and version control are essential to prevent conflicts in shared codebases. Developing a strong understanding of both audio processing concepts and software engineering best practices helps in navigating these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant audio software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Audio Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as C++ or Java), a solid understanding of digital signal processing, and a relevant degree in computer science, audio engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard audio development tools (like JUCE or VST SDKs), version control systems, and audio plugin frameworks is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help someone excel in this role. This is more than a telecom engineering roleโ€”it's an opportunity to build scalable, high-performance communication platforms that directly support better healthcare outcomes. You'll leverage deep expertise in VoIP, SIP, and real-time media technologies to deliver highly available, ultra-low latency solutions while helping shape the future of connected healthcare.

What You'll be doing

  • Design and operate highly available SIP routing platforms supporting real-time communications at scale.
  • Scale and optimize media servers, Session Border Controllers (SBCs), and signaling environments to ensure exceptional reliability and performance.
  • Build intelligent, low-latency call routing solutions that deliver seamless communication experiences.
  • Partner with software engineering teams to integrate voice and video capabilities into modern applications and services.
  • Investigate and resolve complex real-time communication challenges, including media quality issues, packet loss, latency, and network performance.
  • Drive technical strategy and establish engineering best practices for voice and video infrastructure.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization and serve as a subject matter expert in telecom and real-time communications technologies.
What you'll bring
  • 5+ years of experience developing and supporting real-time voice and video communication systems.
  • Deep handsโ€‘on expertise with SIP and related telecommunications protocols.
  • Strong experience building and operating VoIP platforms in production environments.
  • Production-level experience with Kamailio or FreeSWITCH.
  • Experience developing backend services using .NET or Node.js/TypeScript.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex network, signaling, and media delivery challenges.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing callโ€‘routing logic and automation using LUA.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with WebRTC, STUN/TURN, and browser-based audio/video communications.
  • Familiarity with Asterisk platforms and deployments.
  • Strong ANSI C knowledge for low-level debugging, media processing, and infrastructure optimization.
  • Advanced proficiency with Node.js and TypeScript.
Why Join Us?
  • Own and influence the communication platform strategy behind innovative Connected Care products.
  • Work on technologies that directly impact clinicians, caregivers, and patients around the world.
  • Tackle complex engineering challenges within realโ€‘time communications, networking, and distributed systems.
  • Collaborate with talented crossโ€‘functional teams driving the next generation of healthcare technology.
  • Make a meaningful impact while growing your technical leadership as a Principal Engineer.
