Assistant Animal Control Officer - Part Time
The Opportunity
The Town of Mansfield, Connecticut (www.mansfieldct.gov) is seeking a part-time Assistant Animal Control Officer. This position enforces state statutes, state protocols, and town ordinances; impounds roaming/stray dogs and sick/abandoned cats; cares for dogs and cats housed at the Animal Shelter; and follows up on unlicensed dogs.
About Us
The Mansfield Animal Shelter is part of the public safety department. Our highly motivated Shelter team currently consists of 3 certified animal control officers and 2 kennel cleaners. We provide 24/7 animal control services 365 days a week for the Town of Mansfield.
Mansfield, with a population of approximately 26,000, is located in the Northeastern portion of the state, better known as Connecticut's Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. Home to the University of Connecticut, Mansfield offers the unique blend of urban (Downtown Storrs - www.mansfieldmdp.org), suburban, and rural living in a university setting. Mansfield has a variety of cultural and educational offerings, as well as an abundance of natural resources ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking. Mansfield is a Council-Manager form of government, with the Town Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town.
Work Schedule & Location
This position is scheduled for a minimum of 7 hours per week. The selected candidate will normally work 2 days (14 hours) a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and will sometimes be scheduled for Sunday morning and holiday mornings. Will be on call for emergencies on Thursday ( 24 hour shift) and some holidays. May be scheduled for additional shifts as needed.
The work location is the Town of Mansfield Animal Shelter, 230 Clover Mill Road, Mansfield Center, CT 06250.
Compensation
The hourly rate of pay is $23.65-$28.38. The hiring rate of pay will depend upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. There are no benefits associated with this part-time position. The candidate will receive a stipend when scheduled for on-call shifts, and will be compensated when responding to emergencies when on-call.
Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required. Candidate(s) must possess a valid driver's license. The selected candidate will be required to obtain and maintain rabies vaccination and titers. Within 12 months from the selected candidate's date of hire, they must become certified in the state of Connecticut as an Animal Control Officer.
Experience working with the public desirable. Ability to work independently, good organizational and communications skills essential.
On-Call Coverage Requirement:
During on-call hours, the staff member is expected to remain within a 40-minute radius of the Town of Mansfield to ensure an appropriate response time to emergency calls.
