Position Summary... What you'll do...
As a General Transportation Manager, you will lead transportation operations across a large-scale network, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of goods while delivering exceptional service to customers, stores, and supply chain partners. You will provide strategic leadership for fleet operations, asset management, transportation planning, safety and compliance, carrier partnerships, and operational excellence initiatives. This role is critical to driving network performance, developing high-performing teams, and advancing Walmart's supply chain capabilities through innovation, technology, and continuous improvement. Key ResponsibilitiesLead Transportation Strategy & Operations
  • Develop and execute transportation strategies that support business objectives, customer needs, and network performance goals.
  • Oversee transportation operations to ensure on-time delivery, optimal fleet utilization, service excellence, and cost efficiency.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that enhance operational performance and scalability across the transportation network.
  • Analyze operational data, business trends, and customer requirements to drive informed decision-making and sustainable results.
  • Lead network-level initiatives and cross-functional projects that improve transportation effectiveness and operational execution.
Drive Fleet & Asset Management Excellence
  • Ensure fleet readiness and availability to support business operations and transportation schedules.
  • Optimize asset utilization through effective planning, maintenance strategies, and lifecycle management practices.
  • Guide capital planning, equipment acquisition, and fleet mix decisions across owned, leased, and third-party transportation resources.
  • Monitor asset performance and total cost of ownership to maximize return on investment.
  • Establish and enforce asset management standards, policies, and best practices across the organization.
Champion Data & Digital Transformation
  • Leverage data analytics, technology, predictive insights, automation, and AI-enabled solutions to improve transportation performance.
  • Develop and utilize dashboards, reporting tools, and business intelligence solutions to monitor key performance indicators.
  • Partner with technology and data science teams to identify future-state capabilities and support digital transformation initiatives.
  • Promote data governance standards that ensure data quality, consistency, and transparency.
  • Foster a data-driven culture by coaching leaders and associates to use analytics in operational decision-making.
Enhance Transportation Network Performance
  • Lead transportation planning activities including routing, scheduling, vehicle capacity utilization, and network optimization.
  • Identify opportunities to improve freight flow, reduce transportation costs, and increase overall network efficiency.
  • Evaluate current transportation models and recommend enhancements to support future business growth.
  • Ensure seamless movement of inbound and outbound freight while supporting omnichannel fulfillment strategies.
Manage Risk, Compliance & Operational Resilience
  • Develop proactive strategies to identify, assess, and mitigate operational risks.
  • Lead network preparedness efforts to effectively manage disruptions, escalations, emergencies, and changing business conditions.
  • Direct root cause analyses and implement corrective actions that prevent recurring issues.
  • Improve operational resilience through process standardization, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Lead Safety & Regulatory Compliance
  • Champion a culture where safety is the highest priority throughout transportation operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT), OSHA, EPA, and other applicable requirements.
  • Guide compliance audits, risk assessments, and regulatory inspections while ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Establish long-term safety strategies and implement programs that reduce incidents, improve compliance, and protect associates and assets.
  • Lead enterprise-level investigations and root cause analyses to eliminate risk and drive operational excellence.
Build Strategic Supplier & Partner Relationships
  • Develop strong partnerships with carriers, suppliers, and key stakeholders to support business goals and network performance.
  • Lead supplier performance reviews and establish accountability for service, quality, cost, and compliance expectations.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for significant transportation and supplier-related issues.

The annual salary range for this position is $144,000.00 - $216,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
