Asset Management Engineer information
What does an asset management engineer do?
An Asset Management Engineer is responsible for optimizing the performance, reliability, and lifecycle of an organization's assets, such as equipment, facilities, or infrastructure. They analyze data, develop maintenance strategies, and implement asset management plans to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Their role often involves coordinating with maintenance teams, using asset management software, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. By proactively managing assets, they help minimize downtime, reduce costs, and extend asset longevity.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an asset management engineer?
To thrive as an Asset Management Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, data analysis, and asset lifecycle management, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with asset management software (like IBM Maximo or SAP EAM), and certifications such as ISO 55001 or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are often advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure effective optimization and maintenance of critical assets, resulting in improved operational efficiency and reduced costs.
What are some typical challenges faced by asset management engineers in their daily work?
Asset Management Engineers often face challenges such as balancing the long-term reliability of assets with day-to-day operational demands and budget constraints. They need to prioritize maintenance activities, manage data quality, and implement process improvements while collaborating with multiple departments. Staying updated with emerging technologies and aligning asset management strategies with organizational goals can also be demanding. However, these challenges provide valuable opportunities for professional growth, creative problem-solving, and making a significant impact on an organization's overall performance.

This role is responsible for supporting the development, technical evaluation, and implementation of asset management programs and infrastructure improvement initiatives for municipal water and wastewater utilities. The successful candidate will utilize engineering analysis, data evaluation, and technical assessment methodologies to support utility planning, infrastructure renewal, and risk-based decision-making. Some travel may be required for project site visits, client meetings, field investigations, and industry conferences.
Other responsibilities include:
- Develop technical asset management plans and infrastructure investment strategies.
- Perform engineering assessments of water and wastewater assets, including condition, risk, reliability, and remaining useful life analyses.
- Analyze asset, GIS, maintenance, and inspection data to support engineering planning and decision-making.
- Evaluate infrastructure systems using life-cycle cost analysis, consequence-of-failure assessments, and engineering methodologies.
- Develop technical recommendations for asset rehabilitation, replacement, renewal, and capital improvement programs.
- Prepare engineering reports, technical memoranda, and client deliverables.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related engineering discipline. Minimum of seven years of experience delivering water, wastewater, civil, environmental, or asset management engineering projects with an engineering consulting firm or municipal utility. Demonstrated experience applying engineering principles to infrastructure planning, asset management, condition assessment, and capital improvement programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain

- Experience with GIS, CMMS, Power BI, Tableau, or other utility asset management and analytical platforms.
- Experience managing projects and proficiency with Microsoft Project.
