What is the difference between Assembly Engineer vs Manufacturing Technician?

AspectAssembly EngineerManufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldTechnical diploma or associate degree
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and process improvement in manufacturingHands-on assembly and equipment operation
Industry UsageUsed in engineering and production planningPrimarily in assembly line operations

Assembly Engineers focus on designing and improving assembly processes, requiring engineering knowledge. Manufacturing Technicians handle the physical assembly and equipment operation, often with technical diplomas. Both roles are essential in manufacturing but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

What are some typical challenges an Assembly Engineer may face when transitioning from prototype to mass production?

Assembly Engineers often encounter challenges when scaling up from prototype to mass production, such as ensuring that design specifications are manufacturable at high volumes, identifying and resolving process bottlenecks, and maintaining product quality and consistency. They may also need to collaborate closely with design, quality, and manufacturing teams to adapt assembly processes, source appropriate tooling, and implement automation where feasible. Proactive problem-solving and strong communication skills are key to successfully managing these transitions and meeting production targets.

What does an Assembly Engineer do?

An Assembly Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving assembly processes for manufacturing products. They work closely with design, production, and quality teams to ensure efficient and cost-effective assembly methods. Their duties often include creating assembly instructions, selecting tools and equipment, troubleshooting assembly issues, and implementing process improvements to optimize productivity and product quality. Job description

About Shyld AI

Shyld AI is building autonomous UV-C disinfection, real-time workflow intelligence, and edge AI to help hospitals improve infection prevention and operational efficiency. Our devices are deployed in high-risk clinical areas such as operating rooms, procedure rooms, ICUs, and other critical hospital spaces.

We are looking for a hands-on Assembly Technician to support the assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and preparation of Shyld AI devices for deployment.

Role Overview

The Assembly Technician will be responsible for assembling electromechanical hardware systems, supporting device testing, identifying build issues, and ensuring products meet quality standards before shipment or installation. This role is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, reliable, comfortable working with hardware, and excited to be part of a fast-moving robotics and AI company.

Key Responsibilities

Assemble Shyld AI hardware systems, including mechanical parts, PCBs, sensors, cables, brackets, UV-C components, and enclosure assemblies.

Perform hands-on mechanical and electrical assembly using standard tools, torque drivers, soldering tools, adhesives, fasteners, and fixtures.

Follow work instructions, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and standard operating procedures.

Inspect components and completed assemblies for quality, fit, alignment, cleanliness, and functionality.

Perform basic electrical and functional testing of assembled devices.

Support troubleshooting of hardware issues, including wiring, connectors, PCBs, sensors, power supplies, and mechanical fitment.

Document assembly steps, test results, quality issues, and any non-conformances.

Work closely with engineering and operations teams to improve assembly processes, reduce defects, and increase production efficiency.

Prepare devices and accessories for shipment, installation, and customer deployment.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe assembly workspace.

Support inventory control, part labeling, kitting, and material tracking as needed.

Qualifications

High school diploma, technical certificate, associate degree, or equivalent hands-on experience.

1–3+ years of experience in hardware assembly, electronics assembly, manufacturing, robotics, medical devices, or related fields.

Experience assembling electromechanical products, including cables, sensors, PCBs, connectors, brackets, and enclosures.

Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, torque drivers, crimpers, soldering equipment, and test equipment.

Ability to read and follow assembly instructions, diagrams, drawings, and checklists.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical and electrical issues.

Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment where priorities may change quickly.

Reliable, organized, and willing to take ownership of tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with medical devices, robotics, IoT hardware, or regulated hardware products.

Familiarity with quality processes such as inspection checklists, device history records, or manufacturing documentation.

Basic soldering, cable assembly, crimping, and connector experience.

Experience with UV-C devices, sensors, cameras, embedded systems, or edge AI hardware is a plus.

Experience supporting pilot builds, production builds, or field deployment preparation.

Ideal Candidate

You are hands-on, detail-oriented, and take pride in building high-quality products. You are comfortable working with engineers and operations teams, can follow detailed instructions, and are not afraid to troubleshoot problems when something does not work as expected. You enjoy building physical products that will be deployed in real-world hospital environments and directly impact patient safety.
