POSITION TITLE: Secondary Special Education English Teacher
GRADES: High School (9-12)
STATUS: Full-Time (hours/day) or Part-Time (4 hours/day), 10-month position
Position Description:
Under direction of the Head of School and supervisor of educational enrichment, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The Special Education Teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP). Special education teachers must possess knowledge of differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research based reading instruction, and other pertinent special education policies/regulations.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.
  • Deliver classroom and individualized instruction according to curriculum and/or plan guidelines by implementing instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students actively engage in a meaningful learning experience.
  • Collaborate with other general and special education teachers in planning and implementing the specific instructional program for the individual needs of the students.
  • Provide written review of student progress through consultation with and input from the student's other teachers.
  • Develop and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Schedule team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
  • Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Communicate with parents through a variety of means, including conferences, to discuss student progress
  • Provide consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptions, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a positive learning atmosphere in and out of the classroom by providing a safe and secure environment.
  • Provide learning experiences that develop student competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.
  • Use assessment data to inform curricular and instructional practices.
  • Create a positive, achievement-oriented learning environment.
  • Reflect on successes and areas of growth as a teacher, seek to improve performance, and respond to feedback.
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in English.
  • Possession or eligibility for a valid State of Delaware teaching license in Special Education (for more information on State of Delaware licensure, please visit the website of the Department of Education at: http://regulations.delaware.gov/AdminCode/title14/1500/1510.shtml.
  • Successful completion of Praxis I and II exams.
  • Ability to work well with and relate to children of all ages.
