Job description

Position Description: Asphalt Roller Operator 1

Professional Pavement Services is a family owned, full-service paving, construction, and property maintenance contractor serving Central and Northern Ohio. We offer comprehensive, year-round construction and maintenance services, including asphalt, concrete, landscaping, power washing and winter operations. Our mission is to build lasting partnerships and exceed expectations through quality work, safety, and integrity. We take pride in doing things the right way, supporting our team, and delivering work we can stand behind. Built on teamwork, accountability, and respect, we’re looking for people who want steady, hands-on work and the opportunity to grow with a company that invests in its people and serves its communities year-round.

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Asphalt Roller Operator to join our paving crew. The Asphalt Roller Operator will be responsible for operating vibratory and static rollers to compact freshly laid asphalt, ensuring a smooth, durable surface for roads, parking lots, driveways, and other projects. This role requires precision, awareness of asphalt conditions, and teamwork to achieve proper compaction and meet project specifications. The ideal candidate will contribute to high-quality paving outcomes while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Roller Operation: Operate asphalt rollers (e.g., double-drum vibratory or static rollers) to compact hot mix asphalt, achieving the desired density and smoothness per project requirements, including sport courts.
  • Compaction Monitoring: Adjust roller settings, such as vibration frequency and speed, based on asphalt temperature, thickness, and mat conditions to prevent over- or under-compaction.
  • Pattern Execution: Follow established rolling patterns to ensure uniform compaction, avoiding roller marks, and maintaining proper overlap of passes.
  • Quality Control: Inspect the compacted surface for defects like cracks or uneven areas, reporting issues to the foreman for corrective action.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily inspections, fueling, cleaning, and greasing of rollers, and report mechanical issues to supervisors promptly.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and remain alert to crew positions and job site hazards, such as traffic or equipment.
  • Team Coordination: Work closely with the paver operator, screed operator, and laborers to maintain a steady workflow and ensure timely completion of paving tasks.
  • Seasonal Duties: Assist with snow removal and de-icing during winter months.
  • Other: Additional miscellaneous duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 1–2 years of experience operating asphalt rollers or similar heavy equipment preferred; knowledge of asphalt paving processes is required.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods, operate hand and foot controls, lift up to 50 lbs., and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Skills: Proficiency in operating rollers with precision; basic understanding of asphalt behavior and compaction principles; ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred; on-the-job training may be provided for candidates with related experience.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required. Must meet insurability standards. The ability to tow trailers or transport equipment is a plus.
  • Additional Requirements: Ability to pass a drug test as part of a drug-free workplace policy.
  • Phone: Must have cell phone to clock in and out daily, log jobs, and follow other company communications.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors at residential, commercial, or municipal properties, depending on the project.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, heavy materials, and seasonal weather is common; some tasks may involve heights or confined spaces.
  • Schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or weekend work during peak construction or landscaping seasons (spring through fall).
  • Rare but possible multi-day, out-of-town trips, including long-distance travel, and overnight stays.

Salary and Benefits

  • Pay Range: Starting wage aligns with local non-union standards (apart from prevailing wage jobs) and is commensurate with experience, versatility, and additional skills like lawncare/chemical application.
  • Benefits:
  • Medical- partial percentage paid by the company after 60 days
  • Dental and vision after 60 days, along with other ancillary benefits
  • 401K with a company match after 6 months
  • Vesting PTO immediately, can be used after 90 days
  • 90 Probation period
