The Asia Group (TAG) is now accepting applications for an Associate Vice President to join our Washington, DC office.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., The Asia Group ("TAG") is a strategic and capital advisory firm that positions clients โ€“ ranging from Fortune 100 multinationals to innovative startups โ€“ for success in established and emerging markets across the Indo-Pacific region. Our diverse team possesses decades of government and private sector experience with a work ethos that emphasizes teamwork, collegiality, creativity, entrepreneurialism, and mentorship.

We are well positioned for growth and seek an Associate Vice President to join our China practice. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation of China experience, including in-country experience, and recently held a position in business or government that focused on trade, economics, finance, law, or foreign policy. In addition, a successful candidate will have a strong command of the political, regulatory, and macroeconomic environments in China, U.S.-China relations, and demonstrate the ability to distil these trends into actionable insights and strategic recommendations for commercial stakeholders across a broad range of industries.

The role is based in TAGโ€™s headquarters in Washington, DC and requires some domestic and international travel.

Job requirements
  • Advanced degree (e.g., MA, MBA) or equivalent practical experience related to China.
  • 6-7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong client and project management experience.
  • Experience in government relations or comparable experience, demonstrating the ability to integrate public policy with corporate strategy.
  • Expertise in U.S. economic and trade policy towards China, including an understanding of key stakeholders, policy tools, and engagement mechanisms.
  • Deep understanding of Chinese regulatory frameworks, political dynamics, and stakeholders.
  • Experience in key industries including financial services, technology, and healthcare/ biotech/pharmaceuticals (preferred).
  • Strong communicator, demonstrated by the ability to write and present in a polished and effective manner to business executives and others senior-level interlocutors.
  • Experience managing small teams.
  • On-the-ground policy work experience in China (preferred).
  • Proficiency in Mandarin (preferred).
Job responsibilities
  • Assist partners, principals, and vice presidents in managing the China practice, including by supporting the continued growth and integration of TAGโ€™s Shanghai, HongKong and Taiwan offices.
  • Manage day-to-day client workstreams, including inter alia development and review of written deliverables, delivering substantive briefings for clients, and fielding and managing client requests as they come in.
  • Develop regular, nuanced assessments of relevant political, financial, economic, and regulatory trends in China for broad client consumption.
  • Support the firmโ€™s business development objectives, including by identifying/researching potential targets, conducting outreach, and developing proposals.
  • Cultivate and maintain a robust network of relevant stakeholder relationships in Washington, DC and China.

We value professionals who are proactive in exploring new ways to work smarter. Ideal candidates will be comfortable using artificial intelligence tools โ€” or excited to learn how โ€” to increase efficiency, enhance analysis or deliverables, and generate innovative solutions. Familiarity with generative AI platforms or a growth mindset toward emerging technologies is a plus.

Candidates must be eligible to work in United States and are expected to work in-person at the TAG Washington, DC office five days per week.

Please note that the Asia Group maintains a dog-friendly office environment. TAG provides competitive benefits with regular training opportunities available to its employees. For this role, TAG offers a salary of $100,000-$110,000 with eligibility for a discretionary end-of-year bonus.
