What is an AS400 RPG developer?

An AS400 RPG Developer is a software professional who specializes in developing, maintaining, and enhancing applications using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language on IBM's AS400 (now IBM i) platform. These developers work primarily with legacy business systems, often in industries like banking, manufacturing, and logistics. Their responsibilities include writing and debugging code, integrating AS400 systems with modern technologies, and ensuring the reliability and performance of mission-critical applications. Strong knowledge of the IBM i operating system, RPG IV/ILE, and database management is essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS400 RPG developer?

To thrive as an AS400 RPG Developer, you need strong programming skills in RPG (Report Program Generator), knowledge of IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as IBM iSeries Navigator, SQL, CL programming, and sometimes certifications like IBM Certified Specialist for System i is typical. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting business-critical applications on legacy systems, ensuring reliability and efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by AS400 RPG developers when working with legacy systems?

AS400 RPG Developers often encounter challenges when maintaining and updating legacy systems, such as dealing with outdated code, limited documentation, and integrating modern technologies. Adapting RPG code to interface with newer technologies (like web services or APIs) can require creative problem-solving and a deep understanding of both old and new systems. Additionally, collaboration with business analysts and end-users is essential to ensure that enhancements meet current business needs without disrupting established processes.

Is AS400 still in demand?

AS400, now known as IBM i, remains in demand for legacy system maintenance and modernization in industries like finance, manufacturing, and retail. AS400 RPG developers with skills in CL, SQL, and modern integration tools are valued for maintaining critical business applications, though the overall demand has decreased as companies adopt newer technologies.
