Job description

Education - It's in Our DNA
At Barnes & Noble Education ("BNED") we are dedicated to making tomorrow a better, more inclusive, and smarter world by servicing all who work in education. As a leading solutions provider for the education industry, we are committed to driving affordability, accessibility, and achievement at hundreds of academic institutions nationwide by ensuring millions of students are equipped for success in the classroom and beyond. Together, our teams work to elevate lives through education.
To support this mission, we are seeking an iSeries Operations Specialist (Night Shift) to help ensure the reliability and continuity of our production technology environment by monitoring IBM i (iSeries) systems and web environments, executing nightly production processes, managing system backups, supporting production deployments, and responding to operational issues. Success in this role requires a high degree of reliability, attention to detail, sound judgment, and accountability, along with a strong sense of ownership and technical curiosity to recognize when something is not operating as expected, take appropriate action, and engage the right technical resources when needed.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Monitor production IBM i (iSeries) systems and web servers to ensure scheduled processes are running as expected.
  • Perform scheduled nightly production system updates and processing activities in accordance with documented procedures.
  • Update live data on designated websites as part of scheduled nightly operations.
  • Manage and monitor daily IBM i system backups, verify completion, and report or escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Monitor nightly processing, identify operational issues, and perform routine troubleshooting using established procedures.
  • Document and escalate system concerns, processing failures, and other operational issues to the appropriate technical staff.
  • Work with Database Administrators and other IT staff to assist with troubleshooting and resolution of system issues.
  • Implement approved developer code changes to production systems following established procedures.
  • Use Jira to document developer access to IBM i production systems.
  • Maintain accurate departmental procedures and operational documentation.
  • Prepare monthly data required for customer buyback databases.
  • Follow guidance from senior staff when addressing more complex technical or operational issues.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, stay organized, and reliably complete scheduled tasks and procedures.
  • Ability to follow established processes and recognize when an issue should be escalated for additional support.
  • Strong reliability, accountability, and follow-through.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly document issues and actions taken.
  • Familiarity with Windows 11 and general computer hardware and software.
  • Previous experience in computer operations, production support, data processing, or a related environment is helpful.
  • Experience with IBM i (iSeries/AS400), Jira, system backups, or production operations is beneficial but not required.

Please Note: This is an onsite role located in Columbia, Missouri. Applicants must be within a commutable distance, as relocation assistance will not be provided.
