Job description

Marie Watt Studio is seeking a highly organized, excellent people manager and communicator who thrives when working on ever-changing projects as a part of a tight-knit team. This person needs to be a big picture thinker who is comfortable juggling a dozen or more simultaneous projects. As a small business we rely on a team of creative thinkers who balance independent excellence with trust in collaboration to create incredible artworks in a variety of mediums with outsized impact and quality.
The Studio Manager works closely with the Artist to set strategic goals, manage gallery relationships and projects, and acts as the senior manager for a studio team of 5-10 people.
Role and Responsibilities
  • Act as senior manager and direct supervisor for 3-4 production leads and rotating part-time skilled fabricators, including administering annual performance reviews, addressing performance concerns, and mediating conflicts as needed. Lead hiring as needed with support from Operations Coordinator.
  • Oversee Production Leads; manage big picture deadlines and timelines for the studio; manage team workloads and project assignments.
  • Take ownership of externally-facing projects, including external fabrication, public art projects, and working with curators. This involves balancing short-term and long-term deliverables, some as far as three years into the future. Prepare and communicate thorough project plans with clear objectives, timelines, internal checkpoints, and tasks to both the internal team and external partners.
  • Work with Artist to set strategic goals, evaluate opportunities, and plan projects years into the future.
  • Liaise with galleries, curators, cultural institutions, press, clients, and the public, representing the Studio with integrity and professionalism.
  • Assist Artist with copyediting and proofreading artist statements, reviewing pre-published articles, compiling portfolios for press and clients, and occasionally writing persuasive grant applications.
  • Oversee PR and Social Media Coordinator.

Requirements
Experience and Education
  • At least 3 years experience in an administrative or management role.
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Competencies
  • Demonstrated leadership skills; management experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to interact professionally and communicate diplomatically with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally. Must be a good listener who can make room for other voices.
  • Proactive and flexible, able to anticipate needs, think steps ahead, and evaluate the consequences of decisions on the fly. Must be able to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, evaluate and adjust for shifting priorities, and delegate efficiently.
  • An arts/art history background, interest in contemporary art, and/or demonstrated experience or interest in working with Indigenous communities is encouraged.
  • Must have strong emotional intelligence, and a cool head under pressure
  • Organized and meticulous, a great note-taker, and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong ethics and a sense of responsibility. Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • A strong writer with proven skills in research, writing in a clear and approachable voice, reading comprehension, proofreading, and editing for length and clarity. Must be able to adapt to the Artist's voice and writing sensibility.
  • An open attitude to pitch in as needed, whether that means taking on a coworker's administrative task, assisting with artwork install, helping unload a delivery, or a marathon embroidery session to finish a fabrication project.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort learning and adapting to new technology programs and processes. Commonly used platforms include Google Workspace, Zoom, Asana, Artwork Archive, iCloud, and Apple hardware.
  • A valid driver's license is preferred.

Job Details
  • Salaried (exempt) full-time position, 8am-4pm Monday-Friday.
  • Work occurs on-site, with occasional work-from-home flexibility.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours, and business travel spanning evenings and weekends, may be required for specific projects and events.
  • The studio is a dog-friendly environment.

About the Artist
Marie Watt (she/her) is a member of the Turtle Clan of the Seneca Nation whose work draws on images and ideas from Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) protofeminism and Indigenous teachings. Her practice is interdisciplinary, incorporating printmaking, painting, textiles, and sculpture. Watt conducts both solo and collaborative projects, but in all of them she explores how history, community, and storytelling intersect.
