Job description

Long-Term Music Substitute TeacherPosition Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic, engaging, and student-centered Long-Term Music Substitute Teacher to join our school community from August 17, 2026, through October 23, 2026. This is a temporary long-term substitute assignment covering an employee leave of absence. The anticipated end date is subject to change and may be extended or shortened depending on the duration of the leave and the operational needs of the school.

The ideal candidate will provide continuity of instruction across PreK through High School music classes while fostering a positive, inclusive, and joyful learning environment. This temporary position requires a person who values community, creativity, and active music-making while maintaining strong classroom management and organizational skills.

The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty, communicate effectively with students and colleagues, assess student learning, and uphold the music program's commitment to experiential and culturally responsive music education.

Primary ResponsibilitiesHigh School Music ITeach a hands-on music course incorporating:
  • Singing
  • Body percussion and movement
  • Hand drumming
  • Basic piano literacy
  • Develop students' applied musicianship through active participation and lecture-based instruction.
  • Foster creativity, collaboration, and musical confidence.
Middle School Ensemble
Direct a performance-based ensemble emphasizing:
  • Drumming
  • Singing
  • Movement and dance
  • Introduce and rehearse traditional repertoire from Ghana, Cuba, Brazil, and other world music traditions.
  • Develop ensemble skills, rehearsal etiquette, musicianship, and performance readiness.
  • Candidates are encouraged to adapt or redesign the ensemble to reflect their own musical expertise and strengths while maintaining an engaging, performance-focused experience.
Lower School General Music

PreK

  • Lead early childhood music experiences through movement, singing, rhythm activities, and instrument exploration.

Kindergarten/1st Grade Combination

  • Teach foundational rhythm, singing, movement, and introductory music notation and literacy.

2nd/3rd Grade Combination

  • Build music literacy through singing, percussion, and ukulele

4th/5th Grade Combination

  • Continue instruction in ukulele, recorder, vocals, and hand drumming.
  • Introduce beginning skills on stick drumming, piano, guitar, and bass guitar.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging daily lessons aligned with the existing curriculum.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and well-managed classroom environment.
  • Take daily attendance and maintain accurate classroom records.
  • Assess student progress and provide grades in accordance with school expectations.
  • Communicate professionally with classroom teachers, administrators, and families as needed.
  • Collaborate with faculty regarding student progress and classroom support.
  • Utilize the school's educational technology platforms and software systems for attendance, grading, communication, and lesson planning.
  • Prepare students for performances or classroom demonstrations as appropriate.
  • Attend faculty meetings or professional responsibilities as requested during the assignment.
