Position Summary:
Part time Grounds Maintenance Worker will assist in the care, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of both the exterior landscape and hard surfaces of the college. Primary responsibilities include lawn and landscape maintenance, snow and ice control, litter and waste handling, and event set-ups. This position will also assist with athletic field preparations, maintaining cleanliness of shop and equipment, and off campus deliveries/pick ups.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Collect, haul, and dispose of refuse and debris from waste containers and campus grounds.
• Mow, string trim, pull weeds, spread topsoil/mulch, and clean out landscape beds as directed.
• Operate minor power equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, blowers, aerators, snow blowers, and power washers.
• Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, stairways, and building entrances using hand shovels, ice scrapers, or snow blowers.
• Disperse ice melt, salt, brine and other chemicals as directed.
• Assist with the proper installation and removal of trees, shrubs, perennials, annual plants and turf.
• Assist grounds maintenance staff with preventative maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Wash vehicles and maintain cleanliness of maintenance work areas.
• Utilize artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools and software, to support job-related functions and improve efficiency, accuracy, communication, documentation, planning, training, troubleshooting, reporting, work management, and other operational responsibilities, while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
• Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.
• Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Work is outside on campus in various types of weather, including inclement conditions.
Physical Demands:
• Walking over uneven surfaces, bending and kneeling for long stretches of time, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting 50 pounds from floor level to at least waist high.
• Lift, pull, and use pushing motions in repetition with tools, materials, and landscape equipment from light to heavy.
• Work in a typical garage or high bay facility, with potential to encounter wind drafts, dust, exhaust fumes (gas/diesel), and spikes in noise levels due to equipment or tool use.
Hours/Schedule:
This position will not exceed 20 hours per week with variable hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver's License.
• Physically capable of walking over uneven surfaces, bending and kneeling for long stretches of time, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting 50 pounds from floor level to at least waist high.
• Ability to lift, pull, and use pushing motions in repetition with tools, materials, and landscape equipment from light to heavy in weight.
• Ability to work in a typical garage or high bay facility, with potential to encounter wind drafts, dust, exhaust fumes (gas/diesel), and spikes in noise levels due to equipment or tool use.
• Ability to interact with clients, co-workers, and management in a positive, supportive, and cooperative way.
• Demonstrated ability to use standard workplace technology and emerging AI-supported tools relevant to the position. Ability to evaluate AI-generated information for accuracy and appropriateness, maintain confidentiality of institutional information, and exercise sound judgment and ethical practices when using AI technologies in support of work-related responsibilities.
• May be required to operate a vehicle for approved College business. Must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the vehicle operated, meet the College's Authorized Driver requirements, successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Record review, and comply with all College vehicle use and safety policies.
