What is an art school?

An art school is an educational institution specializing in the visual, performing, or creative arts. These schools offer programs such as painting, sculpture, graphic design, photography, illustration, and more. Art schools provide students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge related to the arts, often including studio work, art history, and critique. Graduates can pursue careers in various creative fields, or continue their education in advanced art programs.

What are some common challenges art school educators face when helping students develop their unique artistic voice?

Art school educators often encounter the challenge of balancing foundational technique instruction with fostering creative individuality in their students. While it's important to teach core skills and art history, guiding students to experiment and find their own style can be complex, as students may struggle with self-doubt or creative blocks. Effective educators create a supportive environment, encourage risk-taking, and provide constructive feedback to help students grow artistically while maintaining academic standards. Collaboration with colleagues and regular critique sessions are also essential for nurturing student creativity.

Job description

Gallery & Student Services Assistant (Part-Time)
One River School of Art & Design — Transforming Art Education

Are you energized by creative spaces, emerging artists, and the rhythm of a working art school and gallery? One River School of Art & Design is seeking a Gallery & Student Services Assistant to help shape a welcoming, inspiring environment where students, families, and art lovers connect with contemporary art and creative learning.

This role is ideal for someone with a visual arts background who enjoys being at the center of a dynamic creative community — supporting exhibitions, engaging with students, and contributing to the daily flow of an innovative art school. Evening and weekend hours are available, making this a great opportunity for students, practicing artists, and early-career arts professionals.

At One River, we’ve reimagined how art is taught — blending skill development with contemporary culture to create meaningful artistic outcomes across drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, manga, digital art, and more.

What You’ll Do
  • Serve as a welcoming first point of contact for students, families, and visitors — in person and on the phone

  • Help open and close the school, ensuring a polished, gallery-ready environment

  • Check students into classes and onboard new members into the One River community

  • Lead tours for prospective students and families, sharing our programs and creative philosophy

  • Assist with scheduling class makeups and supporting calendar coordination

  • Build strong relationships with members through thoughtful, attentive service

  • Maintain the gallery presentation and confidently speak about student and professional artwork on display

  • Ensure smooth student pickup and communicate with parents/guardians when needed

  • Support enrollments, schedule changes, freezes, and other student service needs

  • Collaborate with instructors and leadership on projects related to programming, marketing, design, and operations

Who You Are
  • Passionate about visual art, creative education, and community-driven spaces

  • Comfortable engaging with people of all ages with warmth and professionalism

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in an active environment

  • Positive, collaborative, and motivated to contribute to a strong team culture

  • Available for some evening and weekend shifts

Customer service or administrative experience is helpful, but we’re happy to train candidates who bring the right creative mindset and interpersonal strengths.

Bonus If You Have
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace tools

  • Mac experience

  • Graphic design or visual communication experience (Canva, Adobe Photoshop, etc.)

  • Comfort with social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook

  • Background in visual arts, marketing, business, or arts administration

  • Interest or experience in art education, gallery work, or museum settings

One River School of Art & Design is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering an inclusive workplace for all employees and applicants.
