POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Art Therapist DEPARTMENT: Cultural Arts
RESPONSIBLE TO: Creative Arts Therapy Manager

LOCATION: Winchester, VA Campus/Community

JOB SUMMARY: The Art Therapist provides art therapy services to residents throughout the continuum of care, using visual artmaking with a variety of artistic mediums, the creative process, and applied psychological theory within a therapeutic relationship to address the emotional, cognitive, social, physical, and psychosocial needs of residents. The Art Therapist develops and facilitates individual and group art therapy services, collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, and documents clinical services, providing the scope of art therapy services in accordance with professional standards. The position primarily serves residents in Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Healthcare, to fulfill the Creative Arts Therapies Department's mission of supporting an integrated continuum of creative arts and arts in wellness programming for enhanced resident well-being.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS, SKILLS:
Current Virginia Licensed Art Therapist (LAT) required. ATR-BC credential additionally preferred.
Master's degree in art therapy from an accredited educational institution or equivalent educational program meeting Virginia Board of Counseling requirements.
Membership in the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) and/or Virginia Art Therapy Association (VATA) preferred.
Experience providing art therapy to older adults, particularly individuals living with dementia, neurological conditions, or other age-related conditions, preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrate excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
Computer skills & knowledge of current technology.
Demonstrate a passion for art, creativity, and art therapy.

JOB REQUIREMENTS, STANDARDS, AND COMPLIANCE:

Support the Mission and purpose of Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury (SVWC). Perform duties in a manner consistent with SVWC's mission and vision.
Follows and supports the policies and procedures established by SVWC and supports Board of Trustees and Administration.
Present a professional, supportive, and caring image towards residents, visitors, and fellow team members.
Must comply with all required employment training and annual TB Screening as required by Virginia State Licensure.
Must complete and maintain annual mandatory compliance training required by Virginia State Licensure and all other mandatory documentation required by other regulatory agencies and/or by SVWC.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct art therapy assessments and identify residents throughout the continuum of care who may benefit from art therapy services.

Provide individual and group art therapy sessions in accordance with licensing and professional standards.

Provide art therapy interventions appropriate for individuals with varying needs, including but not limited to living with dementia, neurological conditions, chronic illness, grief, end-of-life needs, transfer trauma, and other age-related concerns. Modify and adapt interventions according to residents' changing abilities and clinical needs.

Independently facilitates therapeutic art experiences that promote a variety of appropriate treatment goals, including but not limited to self-expression, reminiscence, identity, social connection, coping, and quality of life.

Utilize visual artmaking with a variety of artistic mediums, the creative process, and applied psychological theory within a therapeutic relationship to address the emotional, cognitive, social, physical, and psychosocial needs of residents. Adapt interventions for individualized abilities.

Develop individualized goals and interventions based on resident needs, preferences, strengths, and abilities, and document treatment plan in resident Care Plans and Individualized Service Plans.

Maintain timely, accurate, and clinically appropriate documentation of art therapy services in accordance with licensing standards and regulations, and organizational policy, including but not limited to assessments, progress notes, and treatment plans.

Assist residents with getting to and from art therapy sessions, encouraging and reminding residents and care team prior to scheduled sessions.

Maintain appropriate therapeutic boundaries and uphold professional and ethical standards, including but not limited to confidentiality and resident rights.

Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and communicate relevant observations and treatment recommendations to appropriate team members.

Provide consultation for staff and care partners regarding appropriate use of art-based interventions.

Participate in department meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and program evaluation as appropriate.

Communicate effectively and professionally with residents, families, care partners, team members, and community partners.

Demonstrate on-going knowledge of aging, dementia, and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as art therapy.

Prepare session plans and supply lists. Maintain adequate inventory of art supplies and equipment. Assist with purchasing and inventory management.

Adhere to program budget in collaboration with direct supervisor.

Adhere to policies and procedures relating to the safety of participants and staff. Oversee the safety of the residents. Monitor and maintain spaces, equipment, and materials in a safe and organized condition.

Keep equipment, supplies, participant furniture, and environment clean. Report housekeeping and maintenance needs.

Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in residents' abilities and needs. Report any psychosocial changes or needs to supervisor.

Respect participant rights (e.g. address participant by name, allow participant to make decisions, etc.)

Participate in intergenerational, community partnership, and outreach initiatives when appropriate.

Maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Make referral to art instructor and/or other disciplines when necessary and appropriate.

Direct received complaints to direct supervisor.

Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Requirements
Ability to push, pull, and maneuver equipment, carts, stretchers, and similar items.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally and perform repetitive lifting of up to 10 pounds.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, squatting, and use of hands for fine motor tasks.
Sufficient mobility and manual dexterity to safely perform assigned duties.
Must be able to use, operate and interpret information form equipment in work area.
Working Conditions
Must be able to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
May be required to work overtime, rotating shifts, or on-call schedules.
May interact with verbally or physically combative residents.
Must properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to OSHA and organizational safety standards.
This position may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials, including HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis B. Employees are required to follow Universal Precautions and all applicable safety protocols when performing duties that may involve contact with these materials.
