Job description

As a key member of the Healthy Living Department the Group Exercise Instructor will provide extraordinary service and information to current and prospective YMCA members. The instructor will utilize excellent listening skills to engage new and existing YMCA members. The instructor will lead a program or provide guidance to new members that will enable them to reach their full potential and build relationships with members that move them along a continuum from a causal connection to a committed level through increased involvement.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
  • Provide courteous, prompt and sincere attention to members, guests, participants and staff.
  • Provide high quality programs that meet the need of the community and members.
  • Acts as the connector for new members in class by welcoming them and introducing them to other members
  • Foster and build strong member relationships
  • Build and maintain effective communication lines with other group exercise staff and members.
  • Communicate and enforce policies and guidelines for the group exercise arena
  • Maintain a safe, clean and functional group exercise area.
  • Educates members on sound ACSM fitness principles and YMCA training recommendation and avoids diagnosing members
  • Completes required abuse risk management training. Adheres to policies and procedures related to appropriate boundaries with children. Monitors building, staff and members and reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations to supervisor.  Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements to authorities. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent customer service and verbal skills    
  • Group Exercise Instructor Certification required
  • Ability to work with all age groups and ability levels
  • Ability to conduct activities related to fitness
  • Model the YMCA Core values
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent leadership and presentation skills 
  • Able to demonstrate the leadership skills and knowledge to lead a class
  • Understands and supports the mission of the YMCA

  • Noise level- High
  • Exposure to electrical/mechanical mechanisms
