What is the difference between Architectural Woodwork Drafting vs Cabinet Drafting?

AspectArchitectural Woodwork Drafting

  • Focuses on detailed drawings of custom woodwork for buildings, including millwork, casework, and architectural wood features.
  • Requires knowledge of building codes, materials, and architectural standards.
  • Work environment includes architectural firms, woodworking shops, and construction sites.
  • Credentials often include drafting certifications and knowledge of CAD software.

In contrast, Cabinet Drafting primarily involves creating detailed plans for kitchen and bathroom cabinets, focusing on functional storage solutions. While both roles require CAD skills and attention to detail, Architectural Woodwork Drafting emphasizes broader architectural integration, making it suitable for projects involving building interiors and architectural features.

Description:

Department: Engineering / Drafting
Reports To: Engineering Manager / Technical Engineering Lead

Employment Type: Full-Time (Salary or Hourly, Based on Experience)
Work Structure: Fully Remote (U.S.-Based)
Experience Level: Mid–Senior (3+ Years Cabinet Vision)

Requirements:

Position Summary

The Drafter / Designer (First Draw) is a technical production role responsible for converting architectural drawings, specifications, and project requirements into accurate, build-ready shop drawings using Cabinet Vision. This position requires strong expertise in cabinet modeling, construction methods, and design interpretation. The Drafter / Designer serves as a critical front-end contributor to HCo’s engineering and manufacturing pipeline by translating design intent into precise technical drawings that downstream engineering, machine programming, and production teams can execute without rework. This is a fully remote role requiring strong self-management, disciplined communication, and the ability to independently produce detailed, high-quality drawings while collaborating effectively with internal teams.

Core Responsibilities

Shop Drawing Creation (First Draw)

  • Create accurate, complete shop drawings in Cabinet Vision based on architectural drawings, specifications, and project requirements
  • Translate conceptual, architect-driven, or design-intent drawings into precise technical construction documents
  • Establish cabinet layouts, dimensions, clearances, and interfaces with adjacent trades
  • Ensure all components meet form, fit, and function requirements

Design Interpretation & Technical Accuracy

  • Read, navigate, and interpret architectural plans, elevations, sections, finish schedules, and details
  • Review and adjust dimensions, materials, joinery, accessories, and hardware per company standards
  • Maintain accuracy and consistency across all drawings within a project
  • Identify gaps, conflicts, or constructability risks and communicate them clearly

Collaboration & Communication (Remote)

  • Collaborate remotely with Project Managers, Engineers, and Production teams to resolve questions and clarify scope
  • Communicate drawing assumptions, constraints, and decisions clearly using company tools
  • Respond promptly to feedback while maintaining drawing clarity and standards

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on Cabinet Vision experience
  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and navigate architectural drawings
  • Strong understanding of design intent, construction logic, and system integration (form, fit, and function)
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid understanding of casework construction, materials, and commercial cabinetry standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in commercial casework, millwork, or architectural woodworking
  • Familiarity with production workflows, CNC-ready components, and shop drawing best practices
  • Experience with Innergy, AutoCAD, or related drafting / CAD systems
  • Technical training or associate degree in drafting, design, or a related field

Success Profile

A successful Drafter / Designer (First Draw) produces clear, accurate, and build-ready drawings that reduce RFIs, minimize downstream rework, and establish a strong technical foundation for engineering and manufacturing. This role requires precision, accountability, and the ability to consistently translate design intent into executable solutions.
