What types of projects and tasks can an architectural intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Architectural Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks that support the architectural design process. These may include creating and revising drawings using CAD or BIM software, conducting site visits, preparing presentations, and assisting in materials research. Interns often collaborate closely with architects, engineers, and other team members, gaining hands-on experience in both design development and project documentation. The workload can be fast-paced and multifaceted, offering excellent exposure to real-world architectural practice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architectural intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architectural Intern, you need a solid understanding of architectural design principles, drafting, and model-making, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree or ongoing studies in architecture. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as knowledge of building codes and construction documentation, is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help interns stand out in collaborative project environments. These skills are crucial for contributing meaningfully to design projects, adapting to fast-paced workflows, and developing into successful architects.

What is an architectural intern?

Architectural Interns are individuals, often recent graduates or students, who work under the supervision of licensed architects to gain practical experience in the architectural field. They assist with tasks such as drafting designs, conducting research, and preparing construction documents. This position is typically a step toward fulfilling the experience requirements for licensure as a professional architect. Architectural interns benefit from exposure to real-world projects, collaboration with experienced professionals, and the opportunity to develop technical and creative skills.
