What does an architect do?

Architects are licensed professionals who design buildings. It is the job of an architect to oversee the development of a project from its initial vision to completed construction. They must adhere to building codes and safety regulations, while simultaneously satisfying the expectations of the clients who contract them. Architects touch every aspect of a building. They meet with clients to assess all fundamental requirements and restrictions for the project, and afterward create and draw up the initial concept and design. These proposed plans will include every detail of the building, from structural design to electrical systems to exterior aesthetics. There may be several iterations between an architect and a client before the final design is solidified. Once the plan is set, an architect often assists the client with acquiring a construction crew, and may even frequent the building site of that project to ensure that timelines and quality standards are being met. Throughout a project, an architect is instrumental in the selection of the building site, cost analysis prep and budgeting plans, and mediation between the construction crew and the client. It is the responsibility of the architect to make sure that everything runs smoothly and the vision is carried out correctly and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect, you need a solid background in architectural design, building codes, and construction methods, typically supported by a professional degree in architecture and state licensure. Proficiency with CAD/BIM software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, along with knowledge of project management tools, is essential. Strong creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills help architects collaborate effectively and address client needs. These competencies ensure that architects can design safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing structures while meeting regulatory and client requirements.

What are some common challenges architects face when working on large-scale projects?

Architects working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring compliance with building codes and client specifications. Effective communication is crucial, as architects must regularly collaborate with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to address design changes and resolve issues. Balancing aesthetic vision with functional and budgetary constraints is also a frequent hurdle, requiring creative problem-solving and adaptability throughout the project's lifecycle.

What is the difference between Architect vs Civil Engineer?

AspectArchitectCivil Engineer
Primary FocusDesign and aesthetics of buildingsStructural integrity and infrastructure
Required CredentialsArchitecture degree, licensureCivil engineering degree, licensure
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, client meetingsConstruction sites, engineering offices
Industry UsageConstruction, real estate developmentInfrastructure, transportation, construction

While both architects and civil engineers work in the construction industry and require related credentials, architects primarily focus on building design and aesthetics, whereas civil engineers concentrate on structural integrity and infrastructure development. Their work environments and roles complement each other, often collaborating on projects to ensure both design excellence and structural safety.

Are architects paid a lot?

Architects' salaries vary based on experience, location, and firm size, but generally they earn a median annual wage that is above the national average for all occupations. Senior architects with licensure and specialized skills tend to earn higher salaries, especially in large or competitive markets. Salary growth can also be influenced by additional certifications and project management responsibilities.

Does it take 7 years to become an architect?

Becoming an architect typically requires about 5 to 7 years of education and training, including earning a professional degree in architecture and completing a required internship or work experience. Afterward, candidates must pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) to become licensed. The exact timeline can vary depending on educational paths and licensing requirements in different regions.

What kind of jobs do architects get?

Architects typically work on designing and planning buildings and structures, including residential, commercial, and public projects. They may also be involved in project management, site analysis, and collaborating with engineers and clients, often using tools like CAD software. Licensing and certifications are usually required to practice professionally.

Job description

Description

At Leidos, we deliver innovative solutions through the efforts of our diverse and talented people who are dedicated to our customers’ success. We empower our teams, contribute to our communities, and operate sustainably. Everything we do is built on a commitment to do the right thing for our customers, our people, and our community. Our Mission, Vision, and Values guide the way we do business.

The AEGIS program at Leidos is seeking a highly experienced OpenShift Enterprise Architect with 8+ years of senior‑level experience designing, implementing, and governing enterprise container‑platform architectures. This position supports NASA’s Office of Strategic Infrastructure (OSI) Facilities and Real Estate Division (FRED) IT within a complex on‑premises Red Hat OpenShift environment used to host enterprise applications such as the Maximo Application Suite (MAS), IBM Storage Fusion, and other mission‑critical workloads.

The architect will provide high‑level technical strategy, platform governance, integration design, security architecture, and cross‑organizational leadership to ensure OpenShift remains secure, scalable, resilient, and aligned with enterprise IT standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

Enterprise Architecture & Platform Strategy

  • Define the end‑to‑end architecture for the enterprise OpenShift platform, including cluster topology, node architecture, compute/storage strategy, and high‑availability patterns.

  • Develop and maintain lifecycle plans, deployment workflows, and CM baselines.

  • Establish architectural standards, reference architectures, and reusable patterns for containerized workloads.

  • Lead platform capacity planning, scalability modeling, and performance optimization initiatives.

OpenShift Platform Design, Governance & Lifecycle Management

  • Design and architect on‑prem and hybrid OpenShift environments including installation, upgrades, cluster expansion, multi-cluster governance, and infrastructure dependencies.

  • Oversee the design and governance of cluster objects (namespaces, operators, ingress, storage classes, policies, RBAC, quotas, pod security standards).

  • Ensure proper architectural controls for backup and restore, DR/Failover strategy, cluster federation, and platform observability.

  • Provide architectural oversight for application onboarding, integration patterns, and workload migrations into OpenShift.

Security Architecture, Compliance, & Zero‑Trust Controls

  • Implement enterprise security policies and zero‑trust requirements across clusters.

  • Architect platform‑wide certificate management, PKI integration, TLS enforcement, secrets‑management policies, encrypted storage strategies, and data‑protection baselines.

  • Direct vulnerability remediation strategy, patch management standards, and secure configuration hardening.

Networking & Infrastructure Architecture

  • Architect routing, ingress, load balancing, reverse proxy, DNS, and firewall rule structures supporting resilient application connectivity.

  • Define infrastructure integration patterns with hypervisors, bare‑metal, storage subsystems, and enterprise identity platforms.

  • Provide architectural guidance for cross‑cluster networking, service mesh, egress controls, multitenancy boundaries, and traffic‑engineering strategies.

Monitoring and Automation

  • Architect end‑to‑end observability solutions using Prometheus, Grafana, Alertmanager, and enterprise logging platforms (e.g., Splunk).

  • Define alerting strategy, SLO/SLI metrics, cluster health dashboards, capacity analytics, and anomaly‑detection baselines.

  • Ensure data pipelines for logs, metrics, and events meet enterprise governance, retention, and compliance requirements.

  • Establish automation standards using GitOps (ArgoCD), Ansible, Terraform, and OpenShift APIs.

Cross‑Organizational Stakeholder Engagement & Continuous Improvement

  • Produce architectural diagrams, executive briefings, governance documentation, and technical decision packages.

  • Recommend platform enhancements, cost‑optimization opportunities, efficiency improvements, and modernization paths.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

  • Minimum 8+ years of combined OpenShift, Kubernetes, and/or Linux experience.

  • Must have a current RedHat OpenShift Administration certification or able to obtain certification within 6 months of employment.

  • Proficient in OpenShift administration, including cluster management, application deployment, configuration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and patching.

  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes concepts and principles.

  • Solid experience with Linux operating systems, including command-line skills and system administration tasks.

  • Experience with container technologies and container orchestration platforms.

  • Knowledge of networking concepts such as DNS, load balancing, and security.

  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues within the OpenShift environment.

  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python) for automation and system management.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across business and technical teams.

  • Ability to learn quickly and work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting NASA or other federal enterprise OpenShift environments.

  • Experience designing and maintaining Enterprise‑level integration architectures.

  • Familiarity with user synchronization methods or large‑scale environment deployments.

  • Experience using Jira Service Management or similar platforms for issue tracking.

Clearance requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust.
