What is an Arch Dev?

An Arch Dev, short for Architecture Developer, typically refers to a software engineer who specializes in designing and developing the overall structural framework of complex software systems. They focus on creating scalable and maintainable software architectures, setting technical standards, and guiding development teams. Arch Devs often collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that the system's architecture aligns with business goals and technical requirements. Their responsibilities may include selecting appropriate technologies, creating architectural diagrams, and reviewing code for adherence to best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architectural developer?

To thrive as an Architectural Developer, you need a solid background in architecture or architectural engineering, proficiency in design principles, and typically a degree in architecture or a related field. Mastery of CAD software (like AutoCAD, Revit), 3D modeling tools, and familiarity with building codes and project management systems are standard requirements. Strong communication, creative problem-solving, and effective collaboration skills set outstanding professionals apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering innovative, compliant, and client-focused architectural projects efficiently.

How does an Arch Dev typically collaborate with other team members throughout a project lifecycle?

An Arch Dev (Architecture Developer) works closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, project managers, and business analysts, to design and implement scalable system architectures. They often lead technical discussions, review code, and ensure that architectural standards are met from the planning phase through deployment. Regular collaboration involves participating in sprint planning, architectural reviews, and troubleshooting sessions to align development efforts with business goals. Effective communication and a strong understanding of both technical and business requirements are essential for success in this role.

Job description

Our Company

Arch is a Series B financial technology company that automates the management of private investments, improving access, understanding, and the human experience of investing across asset classes.

Private investments such as venture capital, hedge funds, and private equity, make up roughly 25% of the investment universe. Traditionally, investors, advisors, banks, families, and managers track hundreds of investments in complicated spreadsheets, file folders, and busy inboxes. Not only is this tedious and time-consuming, but it is rife with opportunity for manual data entry errors, inconsistent reporting, and lost information. Enter, Arch.

Arch delivers standardized data, documents, and insights in a single platform, avoiding the need to chase information across dozens or hundreds of โ€˜portalsโ€™. Our purpose is to save investorsโ€™ time while empowering them to make more informed investment decisions, leading to better financial outcomes.

We are a fast-growing, dynamic team of 200+, serving over 400 clients, including several of Americaโ€™s largest banks, families, and financial institutions. Weโ€™ve over doubled the size of the company every year since inception and we are looking to hire in all departments as we scale.

The Role:

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll serve as a technical leader and force multiplier across our engineering organization. This is a senior individual contributor role with outsized scope โ€” you'll own complex, high-impact systems, set technical direction, and elevate the engineers around you. Your work will shape the foundation of our platform and help Arch scale to meet the demands of a rapidly growing client base.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Architect and drive complex, cross-functional technical initiatives from conception to production, with a focus on scalability and long-term maintainability.

  • Set technical direction for core platform systems, making informed trade-offs to ensure performance, security, and reliability at scale.

  • Partner with product, design, and data teams to define and deliver high-impact features end to end, influencing roadmap decisions with technical insight.

  • Mentor and level up engineers across the team through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on technical guidance.

  • Identify and resolve systemic engineering challenges, including technical debt, infrastructure gaps, and cross-team bottlenecks that impact velocity.

Reach out to us if you have:

  • 8+ years of experience building and scaling web-based software products.

  • A track record of owning and delivering complex technical projects with measurable cross-team impact.

  • Deep expertise in full-stack development, distributed systems, or large-scale backend architecture.

  • Experience influencing technical direction and driving alignment across teams without formal authority.

  • Excellent communication skills โ€” you can articulate complex technical concepts clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience in the fintech space or working on investment platforms.

  • Prior experience as a founding or early-stage engineer at a fast-growing startup.

  • Background in building developer tooling, internal platforms, or infrastructure to improve engineering efficiency at scale.

A Note about us:

Most of our full-time roles are based onsite at our New York City office, where our team thrives on in-person collaboration and dynamic teamwork. Being onsite daily enables us to build strong connections, move quickly, and deliver exceptional service to our clients.

For select roles, we are also open to candidates based in Boston. If a role is open to Boston, it will be listed explicitly in the job location.

We encourage applicants who are located in or open to relocating to the listed location to apply and join us in this hands-on, collaborative environment

Some perks of working for Arch include:

  • Strong Team - Youโ€™ll be backed by a strong team that consistently exceeds client expectations and ships new products quickly.

  • Your work is high impact - Being part of a small team means you have real responsibility and impact from day one. You'll be involved in discussions that drive the growth and direction of our platform from the very beginning.

  • Product Market Fit - We have strong product market fit, exceptionally low churn, and have grown mostly organically through word of mouth.

  • Team community and camaraderie - We have enormous trust in each other and always do what we can do to support one another. We're always ready to step in to help.

  • Great office: Our new home at 199 Water Street gives us a beautiful, energizing space to come together as a team, collaborate more easily, and keep building the next chapter of Arch.

  • Lunch is on Us - Weโ€™ll keep the team fueled with lunch in the office, whether youโ€™re catching up with teammates, talking through an idea, or just taking a well-earned break.
