What is an arboretum?

An arboretum is a specialized type of botanical garden that focuses on the cultivation, study, and display of trees, shrubs, and other woody plants. These collections are often maintained for scientific research, conservation, education, and public enjoyment. Arboreta may feature labeled specimens from around the world, providing valuable resources for botanists, horticulturists, and nature lovers. They play a critical role in preserving plant biodiversity and educating the public about the importance of trees and ecosystems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an arboretum manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Arboretum Manager, you need expertise in horticulture, botany, and landscape management, usually supported by a relevant degree and experience in plant care. Familiarity with plant database systems, GIS mapping tools, and integrated pest management software is typically required. Strong leadership, public communication abilities, and organizational skills help in managing staff, coordinating educational programs, and engaging with visitors. These skills ensure the effective conservation, research, and public enjoyment of plant collections in the arboretum.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in an arboretum, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in an arboretum often encounter challenges such as managing plant health across diverse species, dealing with invasive pests or diseases, and balancing conservation with public education. Addressing these challenges requires ongoing learning, strong collaboration with horticulturists and researchers, and effective communication with visitors. Many arboretum staff also collaborate with local and global organizations to share best practices in plant care, conservation, and landscape management, helping to create a supportive and innovative work environment.

Help Build the Future of Tree Care at SuperTrees

SuperTrees is a growing, multi-state nursery and tree care company headquartered in Canby, Oregon, with expanding operations in Utah and Colorado.

We grow more than 400 varieties of trees and serve landscapers, municipalities, garden centers, contractors, and retail customers throughout the Northwest and Mountain West. In addition to our nursery operations, we provide professional arboricultural services including tree planting, pruning, tree health care, consulting, and risk management for residential, commercial, and municipal clients.

Our success is built on quality workmanship, knowledgeable people, exceptional customer service, and long-term relationships. As we continue to expand, we're looking for an experienced arborist who is ready to lead a growing operation and build a high-performing team.

About the Opportunity Branch Manager / ISA Certified Sales Arborist

This position is designed for an experienced ISA Certified Arborist who combines technical expertise with proven leadership and business management skills.

You'll lead the daily operations of our Utah tree care division while continuing to build strong client relationships and expand our presence throughout the region. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring crews, developing systems, improving operations, and growing a business - not just selling jobs.

You'll work directly with company leadership to help shape the future of our Utah branch while maintaining the high standards that define the SuperTrees brand.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and maintain relationships with residential, commercial, HOA, and municipal clients.
  • Perform site evaluations, prepare estimates, and recommend professional tree care solutions.
  • Manage the daily operations of the branch, including scheduling, workflow, and resource planning.
  • Lead, mentor, and support planting and pruning crews to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality work.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to company quality standards.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally while delivering an exceptional client experience.
  • Recruit, train, and develop employees as the branch continues to grow.
  • Collaborate with company leadership on strategic planning, budgeting, and operational improvements.
  • Help develop systems, processes, and best practices that support long-term growth.

What We're Looking For

  • Current ISA Certified Arborist certification (required).
  • Demonstrated success in tree care sales, consulting, or account management.
  • Previous experience managing crews, supervisors, or branch operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of tree biology, pruning standards, tree planting, diagnostics, and industry best practices.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, motivate employees, and develop talent.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Self-motivated with an entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for growing a successful operation.
  • Ability to balance customer service, operational efficiency, employee development, and business performance.

Why Join SuperTrees?

This is more than a management position - it's an opportunity to build something meaningful.

As our Utah Branch Manager, you'll have the autonomy to lead your team, improve operations, and help grow one of the region's premier tree care companies. You'll be supported by an established organization while having the freedom to make a lasting impact on the future of the branch.

If you're looking for a leadership role where your arboricultural knowledge, management experience, and business instincts will truly make a difference, we'd love to meet you.

  • Full-time leadership position
  • Competitive salary plus performance incentives
  • Three weeks of paid vacation (increases with tenure)
  • Six paid holidays
  • Up to 4% company retirement match
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health Spending Account (HSA)
  • Profit-sharing opportunities
  • Continuing education and ISA certification reimbursement
  • Opportunities for professional growth and advancement as SuperTrees continues to expand
