Job description

Journeyman Machinist (Outside)

NBBB has been building boats on beautiful Whidbey Island since 1964. We are located in Freeland, WA where we produce state-of-the-art vessels; tugs, ferries, fire boats, fishing vessels, barges, dinner boats, along with many other sophisticated ships. Just an hour away from the yard is the thriving Seattle metropolitan area. ย Together with our sister company Everett Ship Repair(โ€œESRโ€) and Shared Ice Services, we represent the heft and might of Ice Cap Holdingsโ€™ presence in the maritime community of the Pacific Northwest.ย 

We are now seeking a Journeyman Machinist (Outside) who will install and align major equipment and propulsion systems as well as fabricate machinery components, foundations, and various sub-assemblies in support of other departments

What You will Do

  • Install and align major equipment and propulsion systems including, main engines, gear boxes, pumps, shafts, jet drives, propellers, rudders, and Z-drive systems.
  • Forms, fits, and fabricates structural machinery foundations to blueprints from steel or aluminum including layout and MIG and Arc welding and tacking of components.
  • Aligns and locks down main engines and gear boxes during sea trials.
  • Lay out, cut, form, machine, and prepare for final assembly of all work assignments.
  • Use a variety of mounted and hand power tools, including lathe, milling machine, grinder, drills, dial calipers, torque wrenches, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Test and inspect machine parts and equipment to ensure tolerances are within owner specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Use standard and metric measurements and conversions.
  • Use a variety of metal forming equipment such as sheer, break, roll, press, and band saw.
  • Work with Oxygen Propane torches and Plasma cutters.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in clean and orderly condition and follows all safety policies and regulations.
  • Works as a member of a team or alone, using adaptability and problem solving to complete assigned tasks.
  • Expresses ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Occasionally provide relief for Inside Machinist in building custom components will lathe, milling, drilling, and molding operations, including small and large assembly, machining of steel, alloys, and ship assemblies to blueprint specifications using conventional lathes, mills, and grinders
  • Adhere to safe work practices and housekeeping procedures.
  • Work as a member of a team demonstrating skills to effectively communicate, adapt, interpret and problem solve.
  • Always embrace NBB safety culture and practice safe shipyard work practices and housekeepingย 
  • Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with fellow crew members and supervision
  • Share your knowledge in the trade with other employees, especially those in learning or apprentice roles
  • Perform other tasks as needed that may arise in our exciting work environment

What You Bring to Our Team

  • 3+ Yearsโ€™ experience as a Machinery Assembler, or Machinist (Journeyman)
  • High School Education or equivalent or vocational education
  • Knowledge of shipyard safety practices and vessel terminology
  • Ability to read, interpret specifications, and work from drawings and blueprints
  • Ability to understand and apply basic math skills
  • Ability to express ideas concisely and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to understand a perform basic mathematics
  • Knowledge of basic hand and power tools
  • Understanding and experience with lathe and milling machines
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary
  • Proficiency in converting from SAE to metric and from fractions to decimals
  • Experience working around heavy machinery
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. must be able to work at heights of 60 ft.ย 
  • Ability to enter confined spaces using a respirator, and work in small workspaces at odd angles.

What Additional Things Would Distinguish You

  • Previous experience in a shipyard (new construction or repair) or marine construction environment
  • Experience and proficiency with laser alignment (i.e. Rotoline, Pinpoint)
  • Knowledge of shipyard safety practices and vessel terminology
  • Certification as a Shipyard Competent Person
  • Experience and Proficiency working with multiple alloys / materials (for example, Steel and Aluminum)
  • Working knowledge and understanding of applicable NAVSEA standard items.
  • OSHA 10- Certification
  • Certification and experience in use of forklifts and manlifts.
  • Interest in and aptitude for taking on future crew leadership roles
