Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Apprentice is an entry-level position designed for students currently enrolled in an automotive, diesel, or transportation maintenance program who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in a professional fleet maintenance environment. Working alongside experienced WeDriveU maintenance technicians, the Technical Apprentice will assist with preventive maintenance, vehicle inspections, basic repairs, shop organization, and other maintenance activities. This role provides the opportunity to apply classroom learning, develop technical skills, and gain experience maintaining commercial vehicles. The Technical Apprentice will perform work under the direction and supervision of qualified maintenance team members. The level of responsibility will increase as the apprentice demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and ability to safely complete assigned work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist technicians with preventive maintenance and routine vehicle services.
  • Support basic repairs and replacement of vehicle components under supervision.
  • Assist with inspections of brakes, tires, fluids, batteries, lights, belts, hoses, and other vehicle systems.
  • Perform basic tasks such as checking fluid levels, changing filters, lubricating components, and maintaining tire pressure.
  • Help identify and report vehicle defects or maintenance concerns.
  • Learn how to use diagnostic equipment, shop tools, and maintenance systems.
  • Document completed work accurately and assist with maintaining vehicle maintenance records.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Properly handle tools, equipment, parts, fluids, and hazardous materials.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, environmental requirements, and maintenance standards.
  • Participate in required training and development activities.
  • Assist with parts inventory, shop organization, and other maintenance support activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on experience, training, and business needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, an automotive technology, diesel technology, heavy equipment, or related technical program.
  • Interest in developing a career in fleet or commercial vehicle maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of automotive or diesel systems gained through coursework, training, or personal experience.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely under supervision.
  • Willingness to learn and accept coaching and feedback.
  • Strong attendance, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to complete electronic maintenance documentation.
  • Valid drivers license preferred.
  • Must meet all applicable company, client, and regulatory requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience working in an automotive, diesel, equipment, or fleet maintenance environment.
  • Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and basic diagnostic equipment.
  • Coursework or certifications related to automotive or diesel maintenance.
  • OSHA, ASE student certification, or other relevant safety or technical training.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT'S

The employee must be able to:

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, climb, and work in and around vehicles.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and vehicle lifts after receiving appropriate training.
  • Work in a maintenance shop environment that may include noise, fumes, grease, dust, chemicals, and changing temperatures.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment.

WORK SCHEDULE

The schedule may be coordinated around the apprentices school schedule and the operational needs of the maintenance department. Some early morning, evening, weekend, or holiday availability may be required.
