Summary:
Installs, modifies and repairs new and existing pressured and non-pressured piping systems related equipment.
Posting Period: 6/15/2026 to 7/7/2026
Location: Chelsea, MA
Salary: $65,815.51 - $94,222.99 Annually $1,265.68 - $1,811.98 Weekly
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm
Key Responsibilities
  • Installs, modifies and repairs pressured piping systems such as steam generation, steam heating, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, condensation systems, vacuum and circulating pumping systems in industrial operations and other equipment/systems as required and/or assigned.
  • Interprets from building plans, blueprints and sketches, plans and lays out routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion and operation of various piping/plumbing systems and related equipment.
  • Sets up system routes, places hangers for proper pitch and elevation and determines and installs risers, flexible branches, expansion points, and pump connections.
  • Selects and obtains appropriate stock or materials per established procedures, and tools or machines for the job.
  • Performs work in the field and in the piping shop using related equipment of the pipefitter or plumber trade for the cutting, bending, threading and fabrication of various pipe sizes.
  • Performs preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on pipes, valves, reducing stations, back flow preventors, and associated equipment gaskets, and other related equipment.
  • Performs welding operations common to the trade.
  • Installs new or replacement of piping systems, equipment and fixtures.
  • Follows established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures and policies established by MWRA.
  • Operates motor vehicles and light equipment that does not require a special license, such as vans and pick-up trucks to transport materials to work sites, and pick-up and deliver supplies and equipment.
  • Performs work in a safe and professional manner.
  • Prepares documents and reports results in the Maximo, Lawson or other appropriate Database of inspections and work performed.
  • Performs work in compliance with the Operations Contingency Plan.
  • Assists other trades in the performance of their work, as required, or as assigned.
  • Performs light maintenance independently or as part of a team. Light maintenance shall include but not limited to:
  • Inspects and troubleshoots various systems and equipment.
  • Installs and retrofits/new equipment related to plant systems.
  • Modifies and/or aligns existing equipment to specifications.
    • With proper training, sets up ladders, staging and rigging and utilizes hoists, jacks, dollies, lifts, etc. for proper access to job and to remove and install equipment.
    • Operates portable pumping and/or ventilation equipment to prepare a work area for access.
  • Opens hatches.
  • Installs safety rails.
  • Removes snow from immediate work area.
  • Performs routine testing, lockout/tagout, operation (startup/shutdown) and adjustment of process equipment.

Required Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED; and
  • Satisfactory completion of a certified Journey Level pipefitter or plumber apprenticeship program, or a similar formal training program and four (4) to six (6) years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid Massachusetts Class D Drivers License or equivalent.
  • A valid Massachusetts Journeyman Pipefitter or Plumber License.
  • Complete competency-based training program related to ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES as outlined above and successfully demonstrates required competencies.
  • This position has been designated as essential in instances where the MWRA Executive Director requires essential personnel to report to work such as inclement weather and other emergencies.

Knowledge and Abilities
  • Basic reading, writing, mathematical and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, occupational hazards and safety practices common to the trade.
  • Skills in the operation of tools, instruments and equipment of the trades.
  • Computer skills necessary to access and use the Maximo & Lawson Database.
  • Trained in Confined Space Entry, CPR and First Aid, and be capable of entering, setting-up, installing, disassembling confined space equipment and ability to work in a confined space.
  • Ability to attain knowledge & work processes required to perform maintenance tasks required by Reliability Centered Maintenance or similar Maintenance Management Program.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside-weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. This job is hearing protection required and the noise level in the work environment is very loud in field settings and moderately loud at pumping stations.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Works under the general supervision of a Unit Supervisor.
All plumber/pipefitters may exercise supervision of entry level staff.
