Job description

Mechanic Technician Apprentice
Transdev in Fairfax County is seeking a dedicated and motivated Maintenance Technician Apprentice to join our team. This role is designed for individuals looking to build a career in maintenance and repair services. As an apprentice, you will work under the guidance of experienced mentors to learn essential skills and gain hands-on experience in vehicle service maintenance and repairs. Upon successful completion of the One Year or structured52-week program, satisfactory performance evaluations from their assigned mentor and supervisor, and successful passage of the ASE H8, the apprentice shall be eligible for promotion to a C-Level technician. This position is intended for entry-level individuals interested in hands-on mechanical work and seeking to build a long-term career.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with an assigned mentor to learn and perform quality vehicle service maintenance and repairs.
  • Assists mentors or technicians as needed.
  • Maintains excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Retrieves parts from the parts department as directed by technicians.
  • Conducts safety inspections, oil changes, lubrication work, basic maintenance, and minor repairs as instructed.
  • Replenishes supplies as requested by technicians or the Maintenance Manager.
  • Reports any machinery defects or malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Attends training classes and departmental meetings.
  • Operates all tools and equipment safely.
  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to read, write, and to follow safety procedures, training materials, and complete required quizzes.
  • Apply common understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions; handle standardized situations with minimal variability.
  • Apply general understanding to follow detailed but straightforward written or oral instructions; solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Apply common sense understanding to execute instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form; handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Some hands-on work experience with vehicles.
  • Knowledge of shop safety standards.
  • Strong commitment to safety is essential.
  • Must be well-organized.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently without constant supervision are necessary.
  • Flexibility to work various hours or shifts is required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.
  • The employee is generally subjected to long periods spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer screen.
  • Work environment will be a combination of both indoors and outdoors.
