Apprentice Job information

What is an apprentice job?

An apprentice job is a position where an individual learns a trade or profession through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Apprenticeships are designed to help people gain hands-on experience while earning a wage and working under the guidance of experienced mentors. These programs typically last from one to several years, depending on the field, and can lead to industry-recognized certifications or qualifications. Apprenticeships are common in skilled trades, such as construction, plumbing, and electrical work, but are increasingly available in other sectors as well.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice?

To thrive as an Apprentice, you need a willingness to learn, a basic understanding of the industry, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, safety protocols, and sometimes vocational certifications may be required, depending on the trade. Strong work ethic, communication, and teamwork skills help apprentices excel and make a positive impression. These qualities are crucial because they enable apprentices to learn effectively, contribute to their team, and progress toward full proficiency in their chosen field.

What kinds of mentorship and training can I expect in an apprentice job?

As an apprentice, you can expect to receive hands-on training from experienced professionals, often paired with classroom or online instruction depending on the industry. Mentorship is a key part of most apprenticeship programs, with supervisors or journeymen guiding you through practical tasks, answering questions, and providing feedback on your progress. You'll typically rotate through different tasks or departments to gain a broad understanding of the trade or field. This structure helps you build foundational skills while gradually taking on more responsibility as you demonstrate competence.

What is the difference between Apprentice Job vs Trainee Job?

AspectApprentice JobTrainee Job
CredentialsOften requires enrollment in an apprenticeship program, sometimes with a certificationMay require a basic qualification or no specific certification
Work EnvironmentHands-on training in a real work setting, often with a mentorTraining may be classroom-based or on-the-job, less structured
Industry UsageCommon in skilled trades like construction, manufacturing, and electrical workUsed across various industries, including retail, hospitality, and administration

Apprentice jobs focus on structured, skill-based training with certification, often in trades, while trainee jobs are more general entry-level positions with less formal training structures. Both serve as stepping stones but differ in training intensity and industry application.

What jobs do apprentices do?

Apprenticeships involve on-the-job training combined with classroom instruction in a specific trade or profession. Apprentices typically perform tasks related to their field, such as assisting experienced workers, learning technical skills, and gaining practical experience in environments like construction, manufacturing, healthcare, or skilled trades. They often work under supervision and may earn certifications or licenses upon completion.

At Visa, you'll have the opportunity to create impact at scale - tackling meaningful challenges, growing your skills and seeing your contributions impact lives around the world.
Join Visa and do work that matters - to you, to your community, and to the world. Progress starts with you.
Visa will accept applications for this role until at least 08-15-2026
Job Description
Visa's Technology Apprenticeship Program is designed for those with no prior experience interested in receiving hands-on IT training with an organization while also earning a salary. If this sounds like you, we encourage you to apply!
Global Operations Apprenticeship: This program combines classroom training, hands-on mentorship, and real-world projects to help launch a career as a member of our Global Operations Support team at Visa. Apprentices will begin with a 15-week bootcamp where they will receive full-time classroom-style education that will prepare them for On-the-Job Training (OJT). This period is officially known as Related Technical Instruction (RTI). During the RTI period, Apprentices will be contracted as employees of our Apprenticeship Provider, Apprenti. Upon successful completion of RTI, including satisfactory performance review, employment with Visa will begin.
At the conclusion of the year of OJT, those who have successfully completed the program may have the opportunity to be considered for promotion to full-time employment.
Role Overview
The apprentice will be trained to support proactive monitoring and incident response for enterprise systems, network operations, and applications within a 24/7 Operations Command Center. This position ensures service continuity by identifying, triaging, and escalating issues according to established protocols. It serves as a critical first line of defense for operational stability.
Key Responsibilities may include:
  • Client Advocacy & Support: Act as the first point of contact for Visa clients, including financial institutions and vendors, ensuring timely and effective resolution of issues.
  • Incident & Network Operations Management: Proactively monitor systems and network operations, detect and analyze outages using VOCC tools, and escalate incidents promptly per established guidelines.
  • Bridge Stewardship & Communication: Manage internal and external incident bridges to facilitate rapid resolution and provide clear, timely communications to stakeholders.
  • Impact Assessment & Reporting: Evaluate incident impact and draft communications for distribution within defined timeframes, ensuring accuracy and professionalism.
  • Operational Execution: Support scheduled changes and perform troubleshooting across multiple platforms independently while adhering to standard procedures.

Work Hours:
This position requires the candidate to work 10/12-hour shifts during the day (with a 2-week rotation). When scheduled, the staff would be required to work on weekends and public holidays. We aim to start apprentices on a standard schedule and anticipate a move to shift at the midpoint of the program.
Specific assignments will depend upon your skill sets and team needs. By applying for this position, your application is automatically considered across multiple teams.
We are thrilled that you have decided to participate in this program, and we look forward to you joining the Visa family. Your success is important to Visa. To that end, it is necessary that you work diligently toward achieving the standards of the program including, but not limited to: committing to working a schedule in accordance with Visa practices; completing all necessary Visa and/or Apprenti education and training in a timely manner; and maintaining strong performance in your role, including successfully completing any applicable assessments. Failure to comply with the program standards jeopardizes not only your apprenticeship experience, but also your opportunity to transition to a full-time employee at the conclusion of your apprenticeship.
All Visa roles require digital fluency, including the ability to work with emerging technologies such as Generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot) to support everyday work.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
  • 18 years or older
  • Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship
  • Have basic problem-solving skills/analytical mindset
  • Must be local and available to work in person in Ashburn, VA
  • Not currently enrolled in or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree program in a related technical field (cybersecurity, software engineering, etc.)
  • Interest in pursuing a career in the payments space
