Product Specialist 1 – Technology Apprentice (TAP)

Role Overview

Entry-level opportunity designed for individuals seeking to begin a career in IT support within state government. This role combines hands-on experience with structured training across multiple IT domains including software development, cybersecurity, networking, and technical support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with IT teams across cybersecurity, networking, database administration, and application development.
  • Assist in designing, developing, testing, and deploying software solutions.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and testable code following established best practices.
  • Participate in Agile activities including stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Follow IT security policies and procedures to protect sensitive data.
  • Troubleshoot software and system issues, identify root causes, and implement solutions.
  • Support technical documentation creation (design docs, user guides, test plans).
  • Apply foundational data structures and algorithms to real-world problems.
  • Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement activities.
  • Provide technical support for hardware, software, and network systems.
  • Work closely with mentors and team members in a collaborative learning environment.
  • Demonstrate initiative and adaptability in learning new technologies.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of computer systems, networking, and common software tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • IT certification or Associate’s degree (completed or in progress) in IT, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Java, Python, C#, or JavaScript.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and database concepts.
  • Exposure to web technologies (HTML, CSS, React).
  • Understanding of Git/version control and SDLC concepts.
  • Familiarity with branching, pull requests, and code reviews.
