Job Summary:
The Community College of Denver seeks a collaborative and student-centered instructor to teach face-to-face and/or online courses within the Multimedia Graphic Design program. The successful candidate will teach a range of foundational, user experience, and advanced capstone courses while fostering an inclusive, equitable learning environment that supports the success of a diverse student population. Responsibilities include curriculum development and delivery, student assessment and advising, participation in program assessment and departmental initiatives, and collaboration with faculty to advance the quality and growth of the program. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in graphic design, a commitment to culturally responsive teaching, and a passion for preparing students for transfer, employment, and lifelong learning.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. The instructional assignment will include Graphic Design lecture-lab classes in the discipline.
2. In addition to conducting classes, the job includes class preparation, student evaluation, program level assessment, student advising, attendance and participation in student art/design shows and various art/design scholarship programs.
3. Use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in their courses.
4. Attendance at department meetings and response to emails from students and supervisor within two business days is required.
5. Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, scheduling and other matters are also expected of all Graphic Design instructors.
6. Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
Competencies/KSAs:
A demonstrated ability to teach Graphic Design to an underrepresented and diverse student population at a community college or baccalaureate level institution is required. The ideal candidate will show evidence of utilizing a diverse canon in their classroom as to address the equity and achievement gaps in higher education. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally-responsive pedagogical techniques and practices for engaging our diverse student population in addition to having the ability to teach well; create and develop curriculum; work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and administrators); and fulfill the duties of a full-time faculty member in a shared governance environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
An associate degree or higher in graphic design, digital design, digital media, communication design, marketing design, advertising design, media design, technology arts and media, art.
Also allowed:
A bachelor's or associate degree in any field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in graphic design, digital design, digital media, communication design, marketing design, advertising design, media design, technology arts and media, art.
Tested Occupational Experience:
Evaluated based on general guidelines.
Tested Professional Experience:
Demonstrated experience, ability, and talent is validated through local or national recognition in design work or exhibitions, design contributions, publications, conference presentations, curriculum development, or extended employment as a practitioner.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Recent experience working with Latinx/Hispanic, African American, Native American and other racially/ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom is preferred.
• An understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups' experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes is required. Successful candidates will demonstrate a willingness to continually examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support various groups of marginalized students. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom.
• The candidate must have expertise in culturally responsive teaching in design, which will address equity gaps within studio art courses and classrooms. The candidate will also demonstrate knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.
Selection Process:
Preliminary screening will be made on the basis of completed application packet submitted by candidate.
