The General Motors Manufacturing Group is seeking to identify highly motivated and qualified individuals for current and potential future opportunities as a Group Leader. In anticipation of these openings becoming available, we welcome you to apply so we can begin the pre-screening and interview process.

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Defiance Castings on a full-time basis.

The Role:

The Pattern Shop Group Leader is responsible for overseeing the Pattern Shop operations within the manufacturing plant. This role involves leading a team of Pattern makers, ensuring the production of high-quality tools and dies, and maintaining efficient workflow to support automotive manufacturing processes. This position requires the ongoing application and enforcement of the National and Local UAW Agreements. Candidates must possess technical expertise to oversee and support maintenance operations, exercising independent judgment within the framework of Global Manufacturing Systems, with a focus on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE)

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of Pattern makers and tool cleaners, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and productivity standards
  • Work consistently between two plants.
  • Oversee the design, fabrication, cleaning and maintenance of 500+ tools and dies used in automotive manufacturing
  • Ensure all tools and dies meet specifications and quality standards
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce downtime, and optimize Pattern Shop operations
  • Work closely with engineering, production, and maintenance teams to coordinate Pattern Shop activities and support manufacturing goals.
  • Schedule engineering changes, maintenance repair jobs, engineering repairs and preventive maintenance work orders.
  • Provide training and development opportunities for team members to enhance their skills and knowledge in Pattern making.
  • Adhere to training plan for all Pattern Shop JIT's and Apprentices, provide monthly feedback and record weekly training hours.
  • Manage inventory and ensure timely procurement of tools, dies, and related materials.
  • Schedule manufacturing of detail components awarded to the pattern shop.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on Pattern Shop operations, including tooling repair status, tooling availability, productivity, quality, and maintenance activities
  • Maintain a level 4 GMS BPD Board
  • Schedule weekday and weekend overtime
  • Plan weekend work assignments & Holiday work assignments
  • Coordinate with internal contractors to perform monthly safety inspections.
  • Schedule 3D scanning for tooling cycle checks and shop repairs.

Specific physical requirements of the position include the ability to:

  • Work in a loud manufacturing environment that may not be climate controlled (conditions can be hot or cold)
  • Possess good physical stamina and coordination to frequently and repetitively:
    • Bend, twist, kneel, crouch and reach to perform work
    • Lift or carry materials weighing up to 15 lbs. and periodically carry or lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
    • Walk and stand for prolonged periods of time
    • Occasionally sit, climb (including ladders and lifts) and drive vehicles and equipment
  • Read standardized work instructions, operate machines and tools, and perform quality inspections
  • Promptly detect and respond to safety instructions, alarms, and signals
  • Wear personal protective equipment, for example: safety glasses, gloves, hats, ear plugs, and safety shoes

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Must be willing to work weekends and be assigned to afternoon or night shifts.Strong interpersonal skills, experience managing conflict and decision making
  • Proficiency in Pattern Shop design, fabrication, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of automotive manufacturing processes and standards
  • Familiarity with CAD software, CNC machines, and other Pattern Shop equipment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot issues in Pattern Shop operations.
  • High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Computer proficiency, with strong skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience with 3D scanning and repair analysis.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Technical certification or associate degree in Pattern making or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Pattern making, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • Knowledge of foundries and cold-box processes
