What is an apprentice engineer?

Apprentice engineers are individuals who are undergoing practical training and education in engineering through an apprenticeship program. They work under the supervision of experienced engineers to gain hands-on experience while also studying the theoretical aspects of engineering. This combination of work and study helps apprentices develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become fully qualified engineers. Apprentice engineers often rotate through different departments or projects to gain a broad understanding of the field. Successful completion of an apprenticeship can lead to certification and permanent employment opportunities.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an apprentice engineer?

As an Apprentice Engineer, you'll typically be involved in a variety of hands-on projects that are designed to build your technical skills and understanding of engineering concepts. These may include assisting with equipment maintenance, participating in design or testing processes, and supporting senior engineers with ongoing projects. You'll often rotate through different departments to gain exposure to multiple disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, depending on the company. Regular collaboration with experienced engineers and other apprentices is common, which helps you develop both teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apprentice Engineer, you need a solid understanding of basic engineering principles, mathematics, and a relevant secondary school diploma or equivalent qualification. Familiarity with CAD software, engineering drawing tools, and possibly certifications like a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship are typical technical requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure apprentices can successfully support engineering projects, adapt to new technologies, and contribute to team objectives while developing professionally.

What is the difference between Apprentice Engineering vs Junior Engineer?

AspectApprentice EngineeringJunior Engineer
CredentialsTypically enrolled in or recently completed relevant technical training or apprenticeship programsUsually holds a diploma or bachelor's degree in engineering or related field

In summary, Apprentice Engineering focuses on training and skill development through hands-on experience, often for those new to the field. Junior Engineer roles require a formal degree and involve more independent engineering tasks, serving as a stepping stone to higher engineering positions.

How do I get into an apprentice engineering?

To become an apprentice engineer, you typically need to complete a relevant high school diploma or equivalent, and apply through apprenticeship programs offered by trade unions, companies, or technical colleges. These programs often require passing aptitude tests, demonstrating basic technical skills, and being willing to work in hands-on environments while possibly obtaining certifications like OSHA or technical licenses.

What does an apprentice engineering do?

An apprentice engineer assists experienced engineers in designing, developing, and maintaining systems or equipment. They perform tasks such as troubleshooting, testing, and learning technical skills under supervision, often working in workshops or on-site environments. Apprentices typically complete training programs that combine hands-on work with classroom instruction to gain industry certifications.

Apprentice Electrician (Chicagoland)

Base Power Company

Bloomingdale, IL โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 7 days ago

Job description

About Base

Base is America’s next-generation power company. We’re rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization–electricity–by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.

About the Role

Base is looking for Apprentice Electricians to join our field installation crews in Northern Illinois.

This is a unique opportunity to help launch Base Power's first operations outside of Texas. As an Apprentice Electrician, you'll work alongside experienced electricians installing home backup battery systems while learning the trade through hands-on field experience. You'll play an important role in helping establish the foundation for our Illinois operations while developing the skills needed to advance your electrical career.

What You'll Do

  • Hands-On Field Support: Assist electricians with installations, repairs, troubleshooting, and general electrical tasks

  • Installation Assistance: Help with pulling wire, mounting equipment, installing battery systems, and preparing job sites

  • Quality & Compliance Support: Follow instructions to help ensure installs meet inspection requirements and internal quality standards

  • On-Site Learning: Work alongside experienced electricians to build practical skills and real-world electrical knowledge

  • Tool & Material Management: Organize tools, stage materials, and help keep job sites clean, safe, and efficient

  • Emergent Support: Participate in occasional after-hours or weekend work as needed to support urgent field needs.

What You'll Bring

  • Credentials: Enrolled in or eligible for an electrical apprenticeship program in Illinois preferred

  • Experience: 0–2+ years of construction, electrical, or hands-on trade experience is a plus, but not required

  • Mindset: Strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and a "do it right" attitude

  • Communication: Ability to follow directions, ask good questions, and work well with a team

About the Team

The Field Operations team serves as the tactical engine of Base's mission, bringing distributed energy storage directly into customers' homes. As part of our inaugural Northern Illinois team, you'll help establish the operational foundation for a brand-new market while learning from experienced electricians and working with cutting-edge energy technology. We value people who show up ready to learn, take pride in their work, and want to build something meaningful.

Please note: Base is a startup, which means priorities shift and evolve quickly. Your role may expand or change based on the needs of the business at any given time, so the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.

Our Values
  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.

  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.

  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.

  • Everyone’s an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.

  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.

  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we’re creating. We work in-person. It’s not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.

  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.

Do the best work of your life at Base.

Compensation Range: $23 - $25
