CNC Milling Setup Machinist
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled CNC Milling Setup Machinist to set up, program-verify, and operate CNC milling machines to produce high-quality precision parts. The role focuses on tooling and fixture setup, first-article verification, process optimization, and troubleshooting to meet production schedules and maintain tight tolerances. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Mazak, Haas, and CHIRON equipment and strong machining fundamentals.
Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and GD&T to develop accurate setups and inspection criteria.
  • Prepare and install tooling, fixtures, vises, and workholding for CNC milling operations.
  • Load, verify, and run CNC programs; perform dry-runs and prove-outs to validate toolpaths and clearances before production.
  • Set up and operate Mazak, Haas, CHIRON and other CNC milling equipment to produce parts to print and tolerance.
  • Perform first-article inspections and in-process checks using calipers, micrometers, indicators and other precision measuring tools; document results.
  • Make minor program edits and offsets as needed; collaborate with programmers and engineers to optimize cycle time and tooling selection.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues (surface finish, tool wear, chatter, tolerances) and implement corrective actions to maintain quality and throughput.
  • Maintain accurate setup sheets, tooling lists, machine logs and production documentation.
  • Follow safety procedures, maintain a clean work area, and ensure compliance with shop standards and quality systems.
  • Train and mentor junior machinists and assist in continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce scrap.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or apprenticeship in machining or manufacturing preferred.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in CNC milling setup and operation (set-up experience required).
  • Demonstrated experience with Mazak, Haas, and CHIRON CNC milling machines.
  • Strong background in Machining fundamentals, tool selection, feeds and speeds, and cutting tool geometry.
  • Proficient reading and applying blueprints, GD&T, and inspection criteria.
  • Ability to use precision inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators) and familiarity with CMM inspection is a plus.
  • Basic CNC programming knowledge and experience making program edits and setting tool offsets.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work shift schedules as required, lift up to 50 lbs, and stand for extended periods.
  • Preferred skills: Mazak, Machining, Set-up, CNC Milling, Haas, CHIRON, CNC.
