Department: Building and Grounds
Reports To: Facilities Maintenance Supervisor
Location: Memphis, TN
The Plumber is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing and related systems across MATA's facilities, including bus and trolley maintenance garages, transit centers, parkandride lots, and administrative buildings. This position supports safe, code-compliant operation of water, sewer, drainage, and related systems used by employees and customers, and plays a key role in the reliable operation of transit-specific equipment such as bus wash and fueling areas.
- Install, repair, and maintain water supply lines, sanitary sewer lines, drain/waste/vent systems, and gas piping in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
- Install, repair, and replace plumbing fixtures and equipment including toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets, water heaters, eyewash stations, safety showers, pumps, and valves.
- Maintain and repair plumbing systems that support bus and rail maintenance operations, such as bus wash systems, maintenance bay plumbing, shop sinks, and equipment drains.
- Inspect, maintain, and clear floor drains, trench drains, sumps, and storm drains at garages and transit centers to support safe operations and environmental compliance.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to plan pipe routes, material needs, and job sequencing.
- Perform preventive maintenance such as leak checks, fixture adjustments, and periodic replacement of worn components to minimize service interruptions.
- Diagnose plumbing problems, identify root causes, and recommend and implement appropriate repairs or replacements.
- Ensure all work complies with local, state, and national plumbing codes, as well as MATA policies and safety procedures.
- Coordinate with outside contractors and other trades to support larger projects and minimize impact on operations and the riding public.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and labor hours in CMMS or other work order systems.
- Respond to plumbing emergencies, including after-hours calls, as needed.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of a recognized plumbing apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of training and experience preferred.
- Valid State of Tennessee plumbing license preferred
- Two (2) or more years of experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional plumbing; experience in transit, municipal, or public sector environments preferred.
- Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, materials, tools, and installation methods.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work at heights and in confined spaces, and perform physically demanding tasks in garage and field environments.
- Solid problemsolving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship and code compliance.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and facility users.
- Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and high-quality service to the public.
