What We’re Looking For:

The ideal candidate is a recognized appraisal subject matter expert who can confidently assess collateral risk, interpret complex appraisal scenarios, and provide clear guidance while ensuring compliance with agency, investor, and regulatory requirements. This individual balances risk management with operational efficiency and is passionate about maintaining the highest standards of appraisal quality and valuation integrity.

What You’ll Do: 

  • Review and underwrite residential real estate appraisals to ensure compliance with investor, agency, and company requirements.
  • Analyze appraisal reports for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and adherence to USPAP, FHA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, VA, and internal lending guidelines.
  • Evaluate property eligibility, marketability, valuation methodology, comparable sales selection, adjustments, and overall appraisal quality.
  • Assess complex appraisal scenarios involving unique properties, declining markets, rural properties, condominiums, manufactured homes, mixed-use properties, and properties with atypical characteristics.
  • Identify valuation concerns, appraisal deficiencies, and potential collateral risk factors requiring correction or escalation.
  • Review appraisal revisions, reconsiderations of value, desk reviews, and other collateral review products.
  • Partner with appraisal management companies (AMCs), operations teams, underwriters, and leadership to resolve valuation-related issues.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on appraisal guidelines, collateral risk, property eligibility, and valuation best practices.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and agency updates impacting appraisal and collateral underwriting practices.
  • Maintain production, quality, and service-level expectations while ensuring sound risk management decisions.
  • Participate in audits, quality control reviews, and process improvement initiatives to strengthen collateral risk management.


What You’ll Need:

  • Minimum of 5 years of residential mortgage appraisal review, collateral underwriting, valuation, appraisal quality control, or related mortgage experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of residential appraisal methodology, valuation principles, and industry standards.
  • Strong understanding of USPAP requirements and appraisal regulatory compliance.
  • Extensive knowledge of FHA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, VA, and conventional appraisal guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify appraisal deficiencies, unsupported adjustments, marketability concerns, and collateral risk factors.
  • Experience reviewing complex appraisal reports, including condominiums, PUDs, rural properties, manufactured housing, investment properties, and high-balance transactions.
  • Strong understanding of property eligibility requirements, market analysis, comparable sale selection, and valuation reconciliation.
  • Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to interpret agency guidelines and apply them consistently across varying collateral scenarios.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate valuation concerns and review findings.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with appraisal review technology, collateral underwriting systems, and mortgage origination platforms.
  • FHA DE, Licensed Residential Appraiser, Certified Residential Appraiser, or SRA designation preferred but not required.
  • High-speed internet required for remote work, Cable or Fiber ONLY with the ability to connect via Ethernet. Minimum speeds: 70/30 Mbps (basic), 200-300/35-70 Mbps (shared), 500-1,000/100+ Mbps (heavy use).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as an Appraisal Underwriter, Collateral Underwriter, Appraisal Review Specialist, or Residential Appraiser.
  • Knowledge of Fannie Mae Collateral Underwriter (CU), Uniform Appraisal Dataset (UAD), and appraisal modernization initiatives.
  • Experience supporting internal quality control, audit, and regulatory examinations.
  • Ability to train and mentor underwriters and operational staff on appraisal-related topics.
  • Strong understanding of collateral risk management practices within a high-volume mortgage environment.

Compensation:

The hourly rate for this position ranges between $17 - $25 per hour plus bonus based upon individual performance. Annualized target compensation range is $60,000 - $75,000.
