Applied Physics Instrumentation information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Applied Physics Instrumentation specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Applied Physics Instrumentation specialist, you need a solid background in physics, electronics, instrumentation, and data analysis, usually supported by a relevant degree such as physics, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory measurement tools, control systems, data acquisition software, and certifications in instrumentation or metrology are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate and diagnose complex instrumentation issues. These skills ensure precise measurement, accurate data collection, and reliable performance of scientific equipment in research or industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced when working with applied physics instrumentation in a research or industry setting?

Professionals in applied physics instrumentation often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex equipment malfunctions, ensuring precise calibration, and adapting instruments to rapidly changing experimental requirements. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams—including engineers, scientists, and technicians—is essential to address these issues. Additionally, staying current with technological advances and regulatory standards can be demanding but is crucial for maintaining high-quality, reliable measurements and results.

Applied Physics Instrumentation focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining scientific instruments and measurement devices, often in industrial or research settings. Applied Physics involves applying physics principles to solve practical problems and conduct research, which may include instrumentation but also encompasses broader theoretical work. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but their work environments and primary objectives differ.

What is applied physics instrumentation?

Applied physics instrumentation involves the development, design, and use of devices and systems that measure, monitor, or manipulate physical phenomena. Professionals in this field use principles of physics and engineering to create tools such as sensors, detectors, and measurement equipment used in research, medicine, industry, and more. Their work bridges the gap between theoretical physics and practical applications, helping advance scientific discovery and technological innovation.

Job description

ABOUT THE JOB

Anduril is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join the Omen Team at our Costa Mesa HQ. Omen is Anduril's hover-to-cruise autonomous air vehicle (AAV) that packs the endurance, payload, and mission flexibility of much larger airplanes into a novel runway-independent Group 3 platform. Omen can operate from ship decks, beaches, or remote island clearings, providing true runway independence and freedom of maneuver across defense and civilian domains. Omen is the first tail-sitter aircraft with a mass-production contract, with an order of 50 systems representing a decisive investment that anchors production and accelerates the development of future systems.
You will work on new aircraft development in a lean, high-ownership culture where you directly shape the product and operate at a velocity to fly new designs within months, not years.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Perform static and dynamic structural analyses of composites and metallics using first principles and appropriate analysis methods (hand calculations, spreadsheets, scripts, detailed FEA)
  • Develop and own FEM creation and organization at the global and subsystem level
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to drive proper designs based on analytical results
  • Document analysis methodology and results in technical reports for internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Conduct and support validation testing, including instrumentation requirements, load requirements, data collection, and model correlation
  • Participate in flight testing including setting Do No Exceed values, monitoring loads, and dispositioning inspection findings
  • Ensure designs meet customer requirements, industry standards, and safety regulations
  • Stay current with advancements in analysis techniques, materials technology, and industry standards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS or higher degree in engineering or applied physics with a focus in structures
  • Deep understanding of statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and materials properties
  • Structural testing experience (static, buckling, cyclic) including sensor selection, data acquisition, and data post-processing
  • Proficiency in FEA software (ANSYS, Abaqus, NASTRAN) solution sequences for linear and non-linear static and buckling analyses
  • Experience with CAD tools (NX, Solidworks)
  • Proficiency in Matlab or Python (or equivalent) for developing analytical models, data acquisition, and automation
  • Highly motivated, self-starting, and able to perform duties autonomously without supervision
  • Very organized and willing to establish scope and requirements for ill- defined problems
  • Be able to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • 5+ years of experience in a structures, dynamics, or loads related role with high ownership and accountability for hardware outcomes
    • MS or higher degree in engineering or applied physics with a focus in structures
    • Experience with high cycle fatigue and/or turbomachinery
    • Ability to develop workflow automation tools
