Success in Applied Math Research requires a solid background in advanced mathematics, statistical analysis, and often a graduate degree in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience with mathematical modeling software are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are also essential for conveying complex results to diverse audiences. These skills are crucial because they allow professionals to develop practical mathematical solutions for real-world challenges while collaborating across teams and disciplines.
An Applied Math Research job involves using mathematical theories, models, and computational techniques to solve real-world problems in various fields like engineering, finance, healthcare, and technology. Researchers apply advanced mathematical methods to analyze data, optimize systems, and develop predictive models. They often collaborate with scientists, engineers, and analysts to provide mathematical solutions to complex challenges.
Applied Math Researchers often work on projects such as optimizing operational systems, developing models for data analysis, or solving industry-specific challenges in fields like finance, engineering, logistics, or healthcare. These roles frequently involve both independent analysis and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, requiring researchers to explain mathematical solutions to non-specialists. Depending on the industry, you might contribute to new product development, process improvements, or risk assessments. The work is dynamic, with each project presenting unique problems and ample opportunities to make a measurable impact. This diversity ensures continual learning and the chance to broaden your expertise in various applied domains.

Goucher College's Graduate & Professional Studies seeks non-tenure-track adjunct faculty to teach the following graduate courses within the M.A. in Policy Analytics (MAPA) program. The course will be offered synchronously online (via Teams), starting on August 25, 2026. The instructor will be required to maintain a Canvas site for course resources. Of particular interest are candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds. We are particularly interested in candidates who can deepen our students' understanding of the interactions between the practical use of analytical tools and methods for evaluating, designing, and improving public policies. Contracts for adjunct faculty are subject to renewal on a semester-by-semester basis, depending on factors such as enrollment, instructor availability and performance, and student success.
Data Ethics (3 credits)
This course provides a framework to analyze the ethical and fair use of big data. This course investigates ethical issues arising from data-driven societal decision-making. Students delve into key areas such as bias, fairness, privacy, surveillance, and discrimination, as well as data collection, storage, and management. Through case study analysis and hands-on experiments, this course will help data professionals better understand the ethical implications involved in data analytics and the use of technologies such as artificial intelligence. The class particularly focuses on policy matters and global governance standards.
Requirements:
A successful candidate would be able to begin teaching on August 25, 2026, and teach the course on Wednesday evenings.Preference is given to candidates who have previously taught such a course.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master's degree in a relevant field, such as Data Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, Applied Mathematics, Political Science, or other social sciences, with strong quantitative method training.
Demonstrated ability to use at least one major data tool like R or Python
At least one year of experience teaching at the college level in data analysis, research methods, or quantitative reasoning
Comfortable working with students from diverse disciplinary and professional backgrounds, including those without strong math or coding foundations.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Ph.D., J.D., or other terminal degree in a relevant field, such as Data Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, Applied Mathematics, Political Science, or other social sciences, with strong quantitative method training.
Experience teaching data ethics at the graduate level in person and/or online
Experience teaching graduate-level courses in data analysis, research methods, or quantitative reasoning
Ability to teach diverse learners (e.g., students with policy, nonprofit, or humanities backgrounds) and guide students through individual projects and team-based work.
Please note: this course is online and synchronous.
Salary:starting at $1,400 per credit.Application Instruction:Interested candidates should submit the following materials:
A curriculum vitae
A cover letter that contextualizes the candidate's teaching interests, research, and professional experience (please indicate for which course(s) you are applying to teach)
