Title: Electrical Engineer Intern

FLSA:Non-Exempt (PT)

Reports To: Electrical Engineer


We are looking for a proactive and eager-to-learn Electrical Engineer Intern to provide technical support, assist with design and testing, development, maintenance, and documentation of electronic metabolic measurement instruments. Will gain hands-on experience in projects and will develop engineering skill sets. The intern will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineers and researchers to support various projects that include electronic system evaluation, design improvements, and testing.

Responsibilities:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

As an intern, your responsibilities will include assisting with a variety of tasks, such as:

  • Supporting Product Development Engineering activities, including:
  • Assisting with electrical/electronic designs from concept to implementation under the supervision of senior engineers.
  • Helping develop and review electrical schematics and printed circuit boards (PCBs).


Contributing to Sustaining Engineering tasks, such as:

  • Assisting with component identification, testing, and qualification.
  • Supporting failure root cause analysis of product returns and helping implement corrective actions.
  • Assist with documentation of prototype requirements and specifications.
  • Assist with the development of the Bill of Materials.
  • Participating in Product Design Reviews and providing feedback.
  • Assisting in testing and validation of electronic systems, including executing test plans for product performance and design analysis.
  • Working alongside the manufacturing team to support product design details and help ensure manufacturability.
  • Participating in discussions about the latest relevant technologies and providing suggestions for current projects.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the engineering team.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A proactive, curious, and hands-on approach to learning.
  • Willingness to ask questions, provide feedback, and propose alternative solutions.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical/electronic hardware design and development.
  • Familiarity with PCB design and layout.
  • Some experience or coursework with communication protocols (e.g., USB, I2C, SPI).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a team and communicate clearly both in writing and verbally.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with the basics of firmware development.
  • Assist with assembly, integration, and test of complex prototype instrumentation, including gas analyzers, flow control systems, and precision sensor subsystems.

  • Familiarity with C/C++ languages or other programming experience.
  • Experience or coursework related to PCB failure analysis.
  • Understanding of functional and environmental testing for electronic devices.
  • Interest in emerging technologies, mechatronics, and electronics.
  • Basic understanding of version control systems such as git.
  • Participation in personal electronics projects or involvement in the maker community.


Education:

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Preferably, currently in the 3rd or 4th year of the program.
  • Coursework or experience related to electrical/electronic design.
