What is the difference between Application Product Manager vs Software Product Manager?

AspectApplication Product ManagerSoftware Product Manager
FocusSpecific applications or platformsBroader software products or suites
Required SkillsApplication development, user experienceSoftware development lifecycle, technical knowledge
Work EnvironmentTech companies, app development teamsSoftware firms, enterprise solutions
Common CertificationsAgile, Scrum, PMPAgile, Scrum, PMP

Application Product Managers focus on specific applications or platforms, ensuring user needs and functionality are met. Software Product Managers oversee broader software products, managing entire product lifecycles. Both roles require similar certifications and work in tech environments, but their scope and focus differ.

Can I be an application product manager with no experience?

Application product managers typically need some experience in product development, project management, or related fields. Entry-level roles may be available for those with strong technical skills, relevant certifications, or a background in user experience, but most employers prefer candidates with prior experience or related knowledge. Building skills in tools like Agile, Scrum, or product management software can help qualify for such roles.

What are top 3 skills for an application product manager?

An application product manager needs strong communication skills to coordinate teams and stakeholders, technical knowledge of software development and product lifecycle, and strategic thinking to prioritize features and align with business goals. Familiarity with project management tools and data analysis is also beneficial for effective decision-making.

Job description

About Fundraise Up

We're Fundraise Up - a global fundraising platform built to make donating to nonprofits fast, seamless, and accessible to all. Every month, our technology powers tens of millions of dollars in donations across the globe. We focus on innovation that directly impacts results: faster load times, higher conversion rates, global payment support, and accessibility-first design.

Our platform is trusted by many of the world's leading nonprofits, including UNICEF, the Alzheimer's Association, and a wide range of global NGOs. With a 4.9/5 rating across top software review platforms, we're recognized not just for our impact - but for the quality of the product we deliver.

About The Role

Great products earn three different stories: the one that wins today's market, the one that opens tomorrow's, and the one that proves the architecture underneath both is right.

We're hiring three Product Marketing Managers for our product-facing team, reporting to the Director of Product Marketing (Product). This function owns positioning IP for what we build, while GTM Product Marketing activates it in market. We're growing the team across three focus areas, and we'll match you to the one where your background and interests are the strongest fit.

  • Core Markets. Our established product lines and the verticals that generate the bulk of Fundraise Up's ARR, including existing nonprofit segments and cause and cure organizations.
  • New Products. Capabilities we're extending into where we already have ICP fit but the capability is new to our platform, including peer-to-peer giving and in-person giving.
  • Platform & Core Products. The foundation everything else is built on: our core donation experience (checkout, campaign pages, donor portal, elements, donor documentation), the platform surface beneath it (APIs, integrations, developer experience, payment methods, localization, billing, dashboard, exports), and the experimentation engine that keeps it all improving.

Each track owns its own positioning IP and works the same way day to day, but the buyer, the maturity of the product, and the technical depth required differ. Let us know in your application which focus area is the strongest match for your background; we'll route accordingly during the interview process.

You are expected to be able to take a customer call about your product area without a solutions engineer in the room, at the depth of our public documentation. Our product is complex and deliberately opinionated. Several of our differentiators are architectural, and you'll be expected to explain why the system works the way it does and turn that reasoning into a case customers find compelling. For Platform & Core Products, that extends to holding your own with technical evaluators in RevOps, IT, and data teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Run the Early Access Program for your focus area, coordinating with Sales and CS to identify and support customers and design partners on early releases.
  • Be an expert at capturing specific customer requirements from the field that Product Managers can incorporate into the roadmap.
  • Define and continuously evolve product positioning and messaging for your focus area, across relevant personas.
  • Transform complex product capabilities into clear, benefit-driven narratives, and build deep expertise in your product area.
  • Partner closely with Product, and with Engineering or Data Science where relevant, to determine product market fit, TAM, and opportunity cost of decisions.
  • Build and lead launch strategies for your focus area, in partnership with the Director.
  • Deliver content to GTM teams, including Demand Gen and RevOps, to drive awareness, adoption, and revenue impact.
  • Own product-vs-product and roadmap-vs-roadmap competitive intelligence for your focus area.
  • Act as an ambassador for your focus area at conferences, in web content, and in customer-facing material.
  • Contribute to packaging, licensing, and bundling strategy for your focus area.
  • At Fundraise Up, AI is a default tool, not an experimental one. We expect every team member to actively use AI in their day-to-day work, identify where AI can change the shape of problems in their function, and grow their fluency as the tools evolve.
Skills and Qualifications
  • 4+ years in B2B SaaS product marketing, owning end-to-end product positioning and launches.
  • Product depth strong enough to take a customer call in your product area without a solutions engineer in the room.
  • Strong writing and storytelling ability paired with a strategic mind.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally in fast-moving, high-growth environments, and confident leading conversations with Product, Sales, and Executive teams.
  • Solid grasp of marketing funnels, sales cycles, and customer journeys.
  • Deeply curious, data-driven, and motivated by purpose-driven work.
  • Able to travel internationally without restriction. Roughly 25% travel to the US and Europe for conferences, offsites, and industry events; you must be able to obtain the necessary authorizations.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in nonprofit tech, fintech, or growth-stage startups.
  • For Core Markets: vertical marketing experience, especially nonprofit, faith, education, or health and cause-area expertise.
  • For New Products: 0 to 1 or new-capability product marketing experience, taking a product from early access through GA with direct early-customer development work, and comfort operating in ambiguity.
  • For Platform & Core Products: technical product marketing experience with platform, API, data, or ML/AI products, and and comfort getting up to speed quickly with a mature, market-leading platform.
You'll Thrive Here If You...
  • You would rather own the source of truth than wait for someone else to write it.
  • You can sit in a customer call and go deep on product with no safety net.
  • You see a stalled launch and start asking why, not whose job it was.
  • You treat AI as a default step in your workflow, not a tool you reach for occasionally.
  • You can turn a messy pile of field requirements into a roadmap-ready brief.
  • You would rather be right about the market than be the loudest voice in the room.
  • You take feedback from Sales, CS, and Product without getting territorial about your positioning.
  • You are comfortable being the one who says a launch is not ready, whether that's a mature product, a brand-new one, or a technical platform release.
Compensation
  • The compensation range for this role is $120,000 - $130,000 USD
  • Final compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, skills, qualifications, alignment with the role's requirements and location.
Perks & Benefits
  • Health, Dental, and Vision insurance covered at 100% for employees, 80% for employee plus dependents, and 70% for employees plus family.
  • FSA and HSA Spending Account.
  • 20 days of vacation, 5 sick days, 11 company holidays plus an additional 1 floating holiday.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • 100% Company-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, basic life insurance and AD&D.
  • Paid parental leave (12 weeks for primary caregivers / 6 weeks for secondary caregivers).
  • Generous home office stipend to support your remote workspace.
  • Annual professional development stipend to support your growth (e.g., workshops, courses, and seminars).
  • Charitable giving program and paid volunteer time off with registered non-profits.
