Fellowships amp; Grants Application Reviewer
About AAUW
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is one of the nation's leading voices promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since 1881, AAUW has advanced equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Through its Fellowships and Grants program, AAUW funds education for women and provides grants to nonprofit organizations, especially those in underrepresented fields and communities, opening doors to academic and career success and helping remove barriers to educational and economic opportunity. For the 2026-27 award year, AAUW awarded $5.4M to women scholars and nonprofit organizations working to advance gender equity.
Summary of Opportunity
AAUW’s Fellowships and Grants (F amp;G) team seeks full-time, temporary application reviewers (ARs) to review fellowships and grants applications for the 2027-28 cycle. ARs play a critical role in advancing AAUW’s mission of equity in education by judiciously assessing fellowship and grant applicants’ eligibility and recommending the highest quality applicants for panel review. Reviewers will conduct thorough, holistic evaluations of applications, including research and/or project proposals, academic records, standardized test scores (if applicable), and supporting documentation.

  • Location: Hybrid; presence in AAUW’s Washington, D.C. office is required 2 days per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
  • Training: Mandatory paid training in early September (dates TBD); additional sessions may be scheduled as needed.
  • Reporting Structure: ARs will work as part of a team and report to the Program and Panel Operations Manager.
  • Confidentiality amp; Conflicts: ARs must maintain strict confidentiality and disclose any conflicts of interest (real or apparent) before conducting a review.
Compensation amp; Benefits
This position pays a rate of $25 per hour. This is a temporary position and is not eligible for health insurance or other employee benefits.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough, detail-oriented reviews of fellowship and grant applications and letters of interest, carefully assessing all materials for eligibility, completeness, and quality against program-specific checklists.
  • Consistently reference and apply established resources, including the Fluxx grants management system and application review guides, to ensure accurate and consistent assessments.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a review team, attending regular team check-in meetings to discuss progress, share updates, and address questions.
  • Consult Program Managers when eligibility questions, discrepancies, or other issues require clarification.
  • Recommend eligible applicants for further review by AAUW panels.
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and comprehensive assessment notes and provide timely progress updates.
  • Follow all quality assurance protocols, promptly address identified errors or inconsistencies, and meet established internal deadlines.
  • Attend all required training.
  • Other application review-related duties as assigned.
Expected Deliverables:
  • Timely, accurate, and thorough completion of assigned application reviews, demonstrating close attention to detail and consistent application of program-specific eligibility criteria.
  • Clear, complete, and well-documented assessment notes and eligibility determinations in the online application review system.
  • Progress reports to be submitted as requested by the F amp;G Team.
Qualifications
