Role Overview

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the conception, design, development, and documentation of mechanical components, systems, and products. This role leverages engineering principles, SolidWorks software, and analytical tools to create innovative, cost-effective, and reliable designs that meet customer specifications, performance requirements, and manufacturability standards. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams from initial concept through production release.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for designing a complete project, system, component, and/or individual piece of custom equipment from concept to manufacturing including assembly and testing.
  • Ability to reverse engineer parts or new parts as replacement for existing equipment and newly designed equipment.
  • Generate bill of materials and drawings for manufacturing.
  • Continuous improvement mindset and openness to design idea modifications to meet customer requests.
  • Provide technical support to the specifications of customer requests.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, suppliers, and engineering colleagues throughout a project.
  • Investigate and address quality control and manufacturing challenge designs.
  • Collaborate with sales, manufacturing and leadership to improve product quality and reduce costs.
  • Manage inventory and availability of purchased parts and raw materials for assigned design projects.
  • Research, design, evaluate, assist in the assembly, and testing of equipment and systems to ensure it meets customer requirements.
  • Monitor assigned design projects from concept to completion assisting as needed to ensure delivery timelines.
  • Design engineering utilizing SolidWorks to generate concept drawings, approval drawings, solid models, and a complete set of part and assembly drawings for fabrication and production.
  • Ability to write technical manuals, create part lists, exploded views, assembly directions and renderings.
  • Present design projects to peers or other Stone personnel for design review.
  • Collaborate with machining, fabrication and assembly in troubleshooting and innovating for future projects.
  • Evaluate equipment and manufacturing processes to ensure compliance with food safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of professional mechanical design engineering experience. (Entry-level roles may be considered for recent graduates with strong co-op/internship experience).
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, and material science.
  • GD&T & Drawing Standards: In-depth understanding and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
  • Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes (CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, injection molding) and design for manufacturability/assembly (DFM/DFA).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a methodical and data-driven approach.
  • Ability to think creatively to develop novel and effective design solutions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in design, calculation, and documentation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-engineers.
  • Ability to manage tasks, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
