What is application development?

Application development is the process of designing, building, testing, and deploying software applications for computers, mobile devices, or web platforms. It involves gathering requirements, creating a plan, coding, and then maintaining or updating the application over time. Application developers use programming languages, frameworks, and tools to create software that meets user or business needs. This field covers everything from small mobile apps to complex enterprise software solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by application developers in cross-functional teams?

Application developers often work closely with designers, testers, and product managers, which can introduce challenges such as miscommunication about feature requirements or shifting project priorities. Balancing technical feasibility with business needs and maintaining alignment across different team members requires strong collaboration and adaptability. Developers can address these challenges by participating in regular stand-up meetings, utilizing project management tools, and fostering open communication to ensure everyone is on the same page and project goals are met effectively.

What is the difference between Application Development vs Software Engineering?

AspectApplication DevelopmentSoftware Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, certifications like Microsoft Certified or Java certificationsRequires similar degrees, often with additional emphasis on software design and architecture certifications
Work EnvironmentDevelops specific applications, often in teams, focusing on coding and testingDesigns and develops entire software systems, including architecture and integration
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for creating user-focused applicationsCommon in software companies, large tech firms, and organizations with complex system needs

Application Development focuses on creating specific software applications, while Software Engineering involves designing and building comprehensive software systems. Both roles require similar skills and credentials but differ in scope and complexity.

You will work with a cross-functional and cross-continental group of software developers and engineers who are creating, enhancing, and supporting PLM applications that are key to the Goodyear design community. The software engineer will design and develop software solutions within these critical systems.
The candidate will evolve as part of a global software development team which implements IT R&D software solutions to support the tire design and manufacturing processes in different innovation and design centers and many manufacturing plants globally. • Develop and maintain customizations using ITK, BMIDE, SOA/REST services, and UI frameworks to support business processes.
    • Perform incident management in alignment with ITIL practices, including root cause analysis, resolution, and problem prevention.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across application, integration, and data layers where root causes are not immediately obvious.
    • Maintain, enhance, and support sub-systems, integrations, and third-party components associated with the PLM landscape.
    • Ensure data integrity, consistency, and system stability through robust design, validation, and operational safeguards.
    • Develop and execute unit testing to ensure high-quality, defect-free deliverables aligned with development standards.
    • Collaborate with business analysts, product owners, and design teams to translate functional requirements into scalable technical solutions.
    • Adhere to established Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) practices, including coding standards, reviews, testing, and release governance.
    • Engage with project managers, architects, and stakeholders to provide technical input, status updates, and risk identification.
    • Seek guidance from senior technical leads or architects when facing ambiguous requirements or unfamiliar technical challenges.
    • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, code documentation, and knowledge base articles.
    • Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks to improve development efficiency and platform capabilities.
    • Support production deployments, including participation in change windows and off-hours activities as required.
    • Operate effectively within EST time zone expectations and support global delivery requirements when necessary.

What We're Looking For:
