What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an application development intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Development Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), software development fundamentals, and often a pursuit of a computer science or related degree. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and basic database management is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in collaborative tech environments. These skills are crucial for contributing to development projects, learning quickly, and supporting the overall success of software teams.

What does an application development intern do?

An Application Development Intern assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications under the supervision of experienced developers. Their responsibilities often include writing code, debugging issues, participating in team meetings, and learning about the software development lifecycle. Interns also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with various programming languages, development tools, and industry best practices. This role is typically aimed at students or recent graduates looking to build their skills and gain real-world experience in application development.

What types of projects do application development interns typically work on, and how much autonomy can I expect in this role?

As an Application Development Intern, you'll usually work on real-world projects such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or contributing to internal tools under the guidance of experienced developers. While you'll be given tasks that match your skill level, many teams encourage interns to take ownership of small projects or modules, providing a balance of support and autonomy. You'll often collaborate closely with software engineers, product managers, and QA testers, gaining hands-on experience in the full software development lifecycle. This structure helps you build practical skills and prepares you for potential full-time roles after graduation.

At BrandActive, we’re committed to building an inclusive, supportive workplace where people can do their best work and grow together. We strive to set the global standard for excellence in our industry while fostering a culture rooted in trust, agility, and growth —guided by our North Star: great people, doing great work, and having a great time doing it.

The Opportunity

This internship offers hands-on experience across creative development, technical knowledge, and design processes, with mentorship and guidance from experienced designers.

The intern will gain exposure to real-world production workflows, learning how design intent is translated into technical documentation and final deliverables across signage, fleet, and environmental applications.

As part of the BrandActive team, the intern is encouraged to collaborate across teams, gaining valuable professional experience while developing practical design and production skills.

Responsibilities

With guidance and support from the design team, the intern will:

  • Assist in creating and preparing artwork files in Adobe Illustrator for signage, branded environment, and other physical asset applications
  • Support design leads in ensuring design intent is accurately reflected in art files
  • Help review files for quality, accuracy, and completeness prior to delivery
  • Assist in the creation of sample, prototype, and presentation documentation
  • Assist with basic 2D and/or 3D renderings to visualize design concepts
  • Support design research by gathering information and data on material, fabrication, regulatory requirements and user experience studies
  • Collaborate with studio team members to support project timelines and workflow organization
  • Demonstrate a professional, clear, and respectful manner when interacting with clients and external partners (e.g. meetings, site walks, prototyping, etc.), under the guidance of senior team members

Professional Development

  • Learn from feedback and apply it to improve technical and creative skills
  • Bring forward smarter, faster, better solutions to processes and identify opportunities to be more agile in day-to-day activities
  • Establish and support an inclusive work environment where team members feel a sense of belonging by demonstrating inclusive values and behaviours
  • Contribute to BrandActive’s core values of trust, agility, and growth

Qualifications and experience

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graphic design, industrial design, experience design, or related program
  • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Familiarity with Mac OS and Microsoft Office tools
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn best practices
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work on multiple tasks with guidance
  • Interest in technical design, UX for spaces or brand implementation
  • Exposure to 3D or rendering software (e.g., SketchUp, CAD, Adobe Dimension, Rhino, Revit) is an asset
  • Familiarity with collaborative file management tools is a plus
  • Comfortable learning how to communicate professionally with clients and external stakeholders
  • Curiosity about using AI tools to support creative and production workflows is an asset

Compensation

This is a part-time position for 420 hours from September – December. BrandActive will pay an hourly rate of $25 per hour.
