Job description

The devices we make at SEL are embedded in the power grid. They help prevent blackouts, make outages safer and shorter, and add critical layers of cybersecurity, automation, and communication. These systems use cutting-edge technologies and operate at speeds that push other pieces of the grid to go faster. As a Designer in Government Engineering Solutions, you'll provide solutions and services that help our customers protect and control critical electrical infrastructure and power systems worldwide.
Note: US Citizenship Required
As a Designer, a typical day might include the following:
  • Create detailed physical and electrical designs and support job estimates under the supervision of a technical lead
  • Prepare CAD drawings and other project documentation
  • Provide design engineering support to project technical leads
  • Complete assigned work and submit within timelines and budgets with a high level of quality
  • Develop and maintain an acceptable level of expertise in SEL and industry design practices
  • Assist and mentor drafters with technical tasks
  • Develop and maintain an acceptable level of knowledge of SEL equipment and solutions for electric power system protection and automation
  • Use best available processes and tools and provide feedback on process enhancements

This job might be for you if you have:
  • Associates degree in EET, CAD, Drafting, or relevant discipline; or possess equivalent experience for each academic year
  • Ability to learn concepts and technical details of products
  • Ability to work with a moderate level of technical supervision, accepting ownership of assigned responsibilities
  • Demonstrated competency in CAD drafting (AUTOCAD)
  • Acceptable understanding of the installation requirements for protective relays of different type and function
  • Willing to travel as needed
  • US Citizenship status
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three plus years of relevant experience with high voltage electrical design, including several projects in protective relay controls systems
  • Possess a BSEE, BSET or related design degree from an accredited college or university
  • Experience testing and commissioning protective relay, process control and SCADA control systems
  • Electrical utility, consulting or system integrator experience
  • Application knowledge of protective relay applications and/or automation applications

Pay Range Information:
$32.88 - $48.60 per hour. Our compensation ranges are based on the responsibilities of the role. Starting pay is determined individually and considers factors such as relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and training. Candidates may be considered at different levels based on their background. As a result, pay may vary to align with the level of the role.
