What is an application design engineer?

Application Design Engineers are professionals who develop, customize, and optimize technical solutions or products to meet specific client or industry needs. They work closely with customers, sales teams, and product development teams to ensure that applications perform efficiently and address user requirements. Their role often involves both engineering design tasks and application support, requiring a strong understanding of both product capabilities and customer use cases. They may also assist in troubleshooting, prototyping, and modifying existing systems to improve functionality.

What are some common challenges faced by application design engineers when working on custom solutions for clients?

Application Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing client requirements with technical feasibility, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring seamless integration with existing systems. They must frequently adapt to evolving project scopes and navigate communication between cross-functional teams, including sales, development, and support. Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills are essential, as is the ability to clearly translate client needs into practical design specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an application design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, software development, and system design, usually supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and programming languages such as Python or C++ is typically required, along with certifications like Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective communication are essential soft skills for translating client needs into technical solutions and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that complex applications are designed efficiently, meet user requirements, and function reliably in real-world environments.

What is the difference between Application Design Engineer vs Software Engineer?

Job description

About the Company

A Series A cloud platform (founded 2020) for modern tech companies — the power of the cloud without the complexity and cost, letting teams run anything, anywhere. Instead of pouring time and money into managing AWS, Azure, and GCP (and getting locked in), top engineering teams use the platform to instantly create production-grade infrastructure on any cloud provider, deploy application code, and monitor and manage it. Series A funded, profitable, growing 8x in ARR since 2022, HQ in New York with an SF office. Flat team, high ownership, working with some of the most exciting YC-backed companies.

About the Role

Hiring a Design / Micro-Interaction Engineer to own the craft and feel of the platform. You'll work directly with the design lead / co-founder on information architecture, core product flows, micro-interactions, and a full rebrand rollout. This is not a handoff role — you design it, you implement it, you own it.

This is a company that cares about building something beautiful and isn't afraid of the hardest problems. The closest reference point for the type of person they want is Vercel's design engineering team. There is no separate product team — engineers own the full development lifecycle, talk to customers directly, and decide what to build.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own design and front-end implementation of core product flows end-to-end
  • Lead the rebrand rollout across website and product
  • Define information architecture and design; create and monitor flows for the platform's main objects
  • Work directly with the design lead to align on design sense, then go above and beyond it
  • Loop into in-flight work streams, give design feedback, and progressively take on owned projects
  • Talk to customers directly and bring product intuition to what gets built
  • Work in two-week project cycles with full autonomy to propose and drive your own work

Must-Have
  • 5+ years of design or micro-interaction engineering experience
  • Portfolio required, demonstrating a strong sense of craft and curiosity (reviewed directly by the design lead)
  • Comfortable and excited about implementing designs, not just creating them in Figma
  • Deep Figma fluency with fast iteration ability
  • AI-native approach to design — excited to use AI to move faster without being blocked by engineering
  • Low ego and strong collaborative instincts
  • Strong communicator who can articulate why something is a good idea
  • Genuine interest in dev tooling
  • Based in or willing to relocate to New York; fully in-person 5 days a week
Nice-to-Have
  • Background at Vercel or a similar developer-tooling company with a strong design engineering culture
  • Experience with information architecture and complex product systems
  • Prior experience shipping micro-interactions in production
Details

Employment: Full-Time | Location: New York, NY — In-person (5 days/week) | Experience: 5+ years
Compensation: $200,000–$280,000 / year + meaningful equity. 30 days PTO, 30 remote days/year, relocation covered, paid on-site work trial. No visa sponsorship.
