What are appliances?

Appliances are machines or devices designed to perform specific household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, food preservation, or laundry. Common examples include refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, dishwashers, and microwaves. These devices help make everyday chores more convenient and efficient, and are found in most homes and businesses. Appliances can be powered by electricity, gas, or even batteries, depending on their function and design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an appliance technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Appliance Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, mechanical repair, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a high school diploma and technical training or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, manufacturer-specific software, and EPA certification for refrigerants are commonly required. Strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top technicians apart. These skills ensure accurate repairs, customer satisfaction, and safety when servicing a range of home appliances.

What are some common challenges faced by appliance repair technicians in the field?

Appliance repair technicians often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex or intermittent problems, working with outdated or uncommon appliance models, and sourcing replacement parts in a timely manner. Additionally, technicians must adapt to rapidly advancing technology as more appliances become 'smart' and require knowledge of both mechanical and electronic components. Collaborating effectively with customer service teams and maintaining clear communication with clients are also essential skills for success in this role.

Sales Professional – Morehouse Appliances (Est. 1894)

Few places can say they’ve been earning customer trust since 1894. Morehouse Appliances has — making us one of the oldest family-owned appliance retailers in America. We’ve lasted 130 years because we hire people who actually care, and we’re looking for one more.

Customers come to Morehouse because they want someone to listen and guide them. You’ll learn the products, the brands, and the craft of taking care of people. We’ve been doing this since 1894 — and we’ll teach you how!

What You’ll Do:

• Greet and engage customers, assess their needs, and make tailored recommendations that earn their trust and their business

• Present and demonstrate products, warranties, track/close sales, and process transactions including financing options

• Maintain expert-level knowledge of all products, specs, features, and new releases across our brands

• Own your area of the showroom — keep inventory updated, pricing and rebates current, floor models fresh, and displays clean and attractive

• Help receive and stock incoming inventory, set up floor models, and ensure accurate labeling and merchandising

• Provide management with customer feedback, report issues, and bring ideas that make us better

• Support in-store promotions, marketing efforts, and community events as needed

• Collaborate with your team

What You Bring:

• 1–2+ years of ACTUAL sales experience required.

• A proven track record of customer service, relationship-building, and closing

• The ability to read a customer, listen, and move them to a decision — without the high-pressure act

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Proficiency with POS systems, CRM software, and basic computer tasks

• Strong organization and attention to detail for sales records and paperwork

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in business or marketing preferred

• Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed

• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move appliances during receiving and stocking

What We Offer:

$50,000–$80,000 Total Compensation (top performers approach $90,000)

base + commission + manufacturer bonuses

• Dental, Life, and Medical Insurance

• Paid Time Off

• Retirement Plan

• A role where your effort directly impacts your income

• The stability of a trusted, 130-year-old local business that isn’t going anywhere

If you’re the kind of person who leaves every conversation having solved something — we’ve been waiting 130 years to meet you.
