What is apparel design?

Apparel design is the process of creating clothing and accessories by conceptualizing, sketching, and developing garment ideas. Designers consider factors such as fabric, color, functionality, and style to produce wearable and appealing fashion pieces. They may work for fashion brands, manufacturers, or as independent creators, and their work involves staying up-to-date with trends and understanding consumer preferences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apparel designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apparel Designer, you need strong skills in fashion design, garment construction, textile knowledge, and often a degree in fashion or a related field. Proficiency with design software like Adobe Illustrator, CAD systems, and familiarity with industry-standard pattern-making tools is crucial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help set designers apart in a competitive market. These abilities are vital for translating ideas into marketable garments that meet consumer trends and production standards.

What are some common challenges faced by apparel designers when collaborating with production teams?

Apparel designers often encounter challenges in translating creative concepts into technically feasible garments, especially when working closely with production teams. Differences in material availability, cost constraints, and manufacturing capabilities can require designers to adjust their original ideas. Effective communication and flexibility are essential, as designers must frequently provide detailed specifications and adapt their designs to ensure both aesthetic quality and production efficiency. Building strong relationships with pattern makers and manufacturers helps streamline this process and leads to better final products.

We're growing fast and building a team that's as thoughtful, real, and bold as the brand itself. As a lean team with ambitious plans for continued growth, we understand that our people are the foundation of everything we build.

The Opportunity
We're looking for an Apparel Design Assistant to join our design team and, from first sketch to finished sample, help bring seasonal collections to life. This is a hands-on role for someone who loves the details of the design process as much as the big creative vision. You'll work closely with senior designers on everything from flats and tech packs to sampling and presentations, gaining broad exposure to how a design team actually operates day to day. Above all, we want someone who is eager to learn, takes ownership of their work, and brings energy and positivity to a fast-moving team. If you're organized, adaptable, and excited to grow your design career, we'd love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist senior designers with concept development, sketches, and seasonal line plans.
  • Create and refine flat sketches, tech packs, and print/graphic artwork using Adobe Illustrator.
  • Prepare and organize design files, color palettes, and trim/material references for each style.
  • Support the sampling process by tracking submissions, fit comments, and revisions.
  • Maintain organized digital and physical files for color and pattern approvals.
  • Help prep materials for design reviews, presentations, and cross-team meetings.
  • Take on new tasks and responsibilities as they arise, with a proactive, can-do attitude.
What You Bring
  • Required: proficiency in Adobe Illustrator; comfortable creating and editing flats, prints, and graphics.
  • Solid computer basics - confident navigating file systems, email, and standard office software (Word, Excel, Google Suite, etc.).
  • Strong organizational skills with close attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced, deadline-driven design environment.
  • A go-getter attitude - self-motivated, resourceful, and eager to take initiative without waiting to be asked.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-first mindset.
  • Genuine interest in apparel, fashion, and design trends.
  • Degree or coursework in Fashion Design, Apparel Design, or a related field is a plus (or equivalent hands-on experience).
  • Prior internship or entry-level experience in apparel/design is a plus but not required.
$45,000 - $50,000 a year
The salary range for this position is commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.ย
