Position Overview:

The SeniorApplicationDeveloper is a senior individual contributor responsible for the architecture, development, release, and ongoing support of mobile applications supporting American Outdoor Brands' products and brands.

The Senior Application Developer will typically specialize in either Android or iOS development and is expected to demonstrate advanced expertise on their primary platform. Experience on the secondary mobile platform is beneficial but not required.

This position leads complex application development efforts, provides technical direction to other developers, mentors less experienced team members, and works closely with Product Development, Electrical Engineering, Product Design, Creative, Marketing, Ecommerce, and IT.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, test, release, and maintain production mobile applications for Android or iOS.
  • Serve as a technical expert for the assigned mobile platform.
  • Lead complex application features and projects from technical definition through production release.
  • Develop scalable, maintainable application architectures.
  • Translate product requirements and user needs into technical requirements and implementation plans.
  • Collaborate closely with Electrical Engineers and Product Engineers on applications supporting connected consumer products.
  • Lead integration of mobile applications with APIs, cloud services, Bluetooth/BLE devices, databases, and third-party services.
  • Establish and advocate for platform-specific development best practices.
  • Perform code reviews and provide technical guidance to other developers.
  • Mentor App Developer I, App Developer II, and intern-level developers.
  • Identify technical risks, architecture concerns, technical debt, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop project estimates and contribute to application development planning.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of complex production issues.
  • Ensure applications meet requirements for performance, reliability, security, accessibility, and usability.
  • Maintain compatibility with current operating systems, devices, SDKs, app-store requirements, and third-party dependencies.
  • Participate in application release planning and production deployment.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate technical documentation, specifications, and test requirements.
  • Evaluate new technologies and recommend improvements to AOB's application development practices.
  • Lead or contribute to new software and connected-product concepts.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline required.
  • 5–8 years of relevant professional software development experience.
  • Significant professional development experience in either Android or iOS.
  • Demonstrated experience independently delivering complex production applications or major application features.
Competencies and Skills:
  • Advanced expertise in one of:
    • Android: Kotlin, Java, Android Studio, Android SDK/frameworks
    • iOS: Swift, Objective-C, Xcode, iOS SDK/frameworks
  • Strong understanding of mobile application architecture and design patterns.
  • Strong knowledge of APIs, networking, application security, data persistence, and cloud-connected applications.
  • Experience with Bluetooth/BLE-connected products preferred.
  • Strong Git/source-control and code-review practices.
  • Experience with automated testing and CI/CD workflows.
  • Strong debugging and root-cause-analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and mentorship capability.
  • Ability to independently manage complex technical assignments.
  • Strong project estimation and planning skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Demands:
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
