Job description

Overview

We are seeking a seasoned and technically proficient Chief Engineer to lead engineering efforts on the AN/BYG-1 Submarine Combat Control System, a critical open-architecture system supporting U.S. Navy undersea warfare missions. The Chief Engineer will guide system architecture evaluations, technology selection, design integration, and performance optimization across the lifecycle of the program. This role requires deep experience in systems and software engineering, strong leadership skills, and the ability to drive innovation and technical excellence across multidisciplinary teams.

This role is based in either Manassas, VA or Washington, DC.


What will you do?

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the technical authority for AN/BYG-1, responsible for leading all aspects of system architecture, integration, and engineering oversight.
  • Direct and coordinate system architecture evaluations, technology trade studies, and performance assessments to guide future system development paths.
  • Lead efforts to define and refine system requirements, ensuring alignment with approved Navy performance specifications and mission needs.
  • Oversee technical review processes, including design reviews, code reviews, and configuration audits, ensuring technical products meet quality and performance standards.
  • Support and monitor design integration across hardware, software, and external interfaces, ensuring cohesive system functionality and interoperability.
  • Collaborate with program management and Navy stakeholders to assess and mitigate technical risks, identify innovation opportunities, and shape development priorities.
  • Lead or support system verification and validation activities, including test planning, execution, and readiness assessments.
  • Mentor engineering staff and foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and collaboration.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 15 years of combined experience in Combat Systems, Systems Architecture, Technology Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Software Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams in evaluating system architectures, selecting emerging technologies, and defining forward-looking development strategies.
  • Experience with DoD acquisition and engineering practices, including architecture frameworks (e.g., DODAF), Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and C4ISR standards.
  • Proven track record in evaluating technical processes, reviewing engineering products, and leading system testing and integration efforts.
  • Strong knowledge of Navy submarine systems and undersea warfare operations, with direct experience supporting combat control systems like AN/BYG-1.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with the AN/BYG-1 combat control system or similar platforms such as APB/ARCI, CCS, or other submarine systems.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA, PEO SUBS, and other Navy technical oversight organizations.
  • Advanced degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity requirements, software assurance, and information assurance as applied to combat systems.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

VTGโ€™s estimated starting pay range is $125,000 - $185,000 Annually, which is a general guideline for the geographic location. When extending an offer, VTG also considers work experience, education, skill level, market considerations and may possibly include contractual requirements which may cause an offer to fall outside of this range.
