How do professionals in antique sales typically build expertise in valuing and authenticating items?

Professionals in antique sales often develop their expertise through a combination of formal education, on-the-job experience, and continuous learning. Many start by working under experienced dealers or in established antique shops, where they gain practical knowledge about different periods, styles, and materials. Attending specialized workshops, trade shows, and networking events also helps them stay informed about market trends and authentication techniques. Collaborating with appraisers, historians, and restoration experts is common and can further deepen their understanding and build credibility with clients.

What are antique sales?

Antique sales involve the buying and selling of items that are typically at least 100 years old and have historical, artistic, or collectible value. Professionals in antique sales evaluate, price, and market antiques to collectors, dealers, and the general public through shops, auctions, or online platforms. Antique sales can include furniture, artwork, jewelry, and other valuables, and often require ongoing research to keep up with market trends.

How do you get into antique dealing?

To become an antique dealer, gain knowledge of antiques through research, courses, or apprenticeships, and develop an eye for quality and authenticity. Starting with small sales at flea markets or online platforms helps build experience and reputation in the industry.
