Antietam typically refers to the Battle of Antietam, a pivotal Civil War battle fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with over 22,000 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing. The Union victory gave President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which changed the course of the war. Today, Antietam National Battlefield serves as a memorial and educational site, preserving the history and legacy of this significant event.
