What does an antenna engineer do?

An antenna engineer designs, develops, and tests antennas and related RF (radio frequency) components used in communication systems, such as mobile phones, satellites, and radar. They work on optimizing the performance, size, and efficiency of antennas to meet specific application requirements. Their responsibilities often include simulation, prototyping, measurement, and troubleshooting of antenna systems, as well as collaborating with other engineers to integrate antennas into larger electronic devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an antenna engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Antenna Engineer, you need a solid background in electromagnetics, RF engineering, and antenna design, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as HFSS, CST, MATLAB, and network analyzers, along with relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this field. These abilities enable engineers to design, test, and optimize antennas that meet performance specifications and industry standards.

What are some common challenges antenna engineers face when designing antennas for modern wireless devices?

Antenna Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing size constraints with performance requirements, especially as devices become smaller and more multifunctional. Interference from nearby components and the need to support multiple frequency bands can complicate the design process. Additionally, ensuring regulatory compliance and optimizing antennas for real-world environments, such as varying user hand positions or device orientations, are key aspects that require both technical expertise and creative problem-solving.

How much do antenna engineers make?

Antenna engineers typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in RF design and simulation tools may earn higher salaries. Certifications and working in high-tech industries can also influence compensation.

What is the difference between Antenna Engineering vs RF Engineering?

AspectAntenna EngineeringRF Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, specialization in antennas or electromagneticsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF or Communications focus
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, testing facilities, field testing sitesDesign labs, testing facilities, system integration environments
Industry UsageTelecommunications, aerospace, defense, broadcastingWireless communications, radar, satellite systems, telecommunications
Common Search/ComparisonFocuses on antenna design, radiation patterns, and propagationFocuses on RF circuit design, signal integrity, and transmission systems

While both roles involve working with radio frequency systems, Antenna Engineering specializes in designing and testing antennas and their radiation characteristics, whereas RF Engineering covers a broader range of RF components and systems, including circuits and signal processing. Understanding these differences helps professionals and employers identify the right expertise for specific projects.

Job description

Responsibilities
We are seeking an Antenna Engineering Supervisor to join our team in Monrovia California to support our Space Communications Network Services Contract (DSN) with NASA.
This role oversees a multidisciplinary group of sustaining engineers-covering software, electronics, microwave, transmitter, and mechanical domains - who support and enhance large, fully steerable DSN ground-based microwave antennas. The supervisor leads acceptance and integration testing for a network of tracking antennas, manages spares replenishment and obsolescence issues, diagnoses field-station problems, recommends corrective actions and interim workarounds, and advocates for funding based on impact to antenna users. The role also analyzes telecommunications link performance and traces issues to underlying ground-system anomalies.
Responsibilities:
  • Supervise a multidisciplinary team of sustaining engineers specializing in software, electronics, microwave systems, transmitters, and structural/mechanical disciplines.
  • Support and enhance large, fully steerable Deep Space Network (DSN) ground-based microwave antennas.
  • Lead acceptance and integration testing for a network of tracking antennas.
  • Oversee spares replenishment and manage obsolescence replacement activities.
  • Identify patterns in field-station issues, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop interim workarounds to minimize operational impact while awaiting sustaining upgrades.
  • Prioritize and report engineering recommendations and advocate for necessary funding.
  • Analyze telecommunications link performance and correlate anomalies with underlying ground-system issues.
  • Provide training to team members as needed.

Qualifications
6 years of experience, may have lead experience
Required Qualifications:
  • 6 years of experience in electronics, microwave systems, RF, mechanical systems, or antenna/servo subsystems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams in an operations, maintenance, or mission-critical environment.
  • Proven background in diagnosing complex field-station or ground-system anomalies and developing corrective actions.
  • Experience with acceptance, integration, and system-level testing of large technical systems (preferably antenna or RF systems).
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications link performance and related troubleshooting methods.
  • Ability to identify system obsolescence issues, manage spares, and develop replenishment/upgrade strategies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and recommendations.

  • You must possess and retain a valid California Real ID driver's license.

Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in engineering or related field.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
  • Experience working within NASA/JPL or similar mission-critical government/contractor environments.
  • Experience with RF/microwave amplifiers, servo systems, or large-aperture antenna operations.
  • Experience with reliability analysis, continuous-improvement methods, or systems engineering processes.
